Not a bug SSL SMTP encryption is forced, there is no choice.

SSL is forced:

The encryption doesn't allow you to choose TLS:

Whereas XF 2.2.15 has the choice:

This causes services like PostMarkApp can't be used because TLS is the only available encryption:

The choices are the same, the terminology has been updated:

Xenforo is using the following phrases for email encryption:
  • None
  • TLS
  • SSL
Looking at the mail standards, we have STARTTLS and SSL/TLS.
I think Xenforo uses TLS as STARTTLS and SSL as SSL/TLS.
Just a side note: STARTTLS would be less secure than SSL/TLS, so it is important to use correct naming convention.

The list should be:
  • None
  • STARTTLS
  • SSL/TLS

2.3.0 beta 8 returns this error:

The error can't be reproduced on XF 2.2.15 so there isn't a misconfiguration.
 
I see, I think there is an issue with TLS in 2.3, but it is not directly related to the renaming of the options.

  • Symfony\Component\Mailer\Exception\TransportException: Email to from failed: Connection could not be established with host "ssl://smtpserver.au:587": stream_socket_client(): SSL operation failed with code 1. OpenSSL Error messages: error:0A00010B:SSL routines::wrong version number
  • src/vendor/symfony/mailer/Transport/Smtp/Stream/SocketStream.php:154
Above error log created when sending email, no email being received.

Well, I'm experiencing the same issue on XF 2.2.16 after updating from 2.2.14:

The same error can be reproduced no matter what port I connect to:

Was it working okay on 2.2.14?

This code didn't change between 2.2.14 and 2.2.16. So it's highly likely to be some other issue.
