There is shop type add ons that you can use so they have things to spent their points on. I don't have one on my site yet but do use the sports book. Some get excited over a big win.

I guess people have their own fetishes; personally, i would not go to a forum
with a credit system to rack up credits if there were no way to utilize them...
I guess people have fun in different ways, but for me, it is just not that
meaningful to win, and not able to use in one way or another....
I guess it is more of a fun addon, then an addon to the forum that provides
real incentives to members for doing this or that....

There are add ons that give your members something to use the money on.

You can also think outside of the box. Reset the money at the first of the month. Member with the largest account at the end of the month gets XYZ as a prize. Most wins in one month gets XYZ as a prize. Biggest payout for the month wins the member XYZ as a prize.

There are many ways to give incentives to your members. As far as not going to a forum that doesn't give you a way to spend free credits, I wouldn't go do a forum if a credit system was all it had to offer. I go to a forum to talk about the topic of the forum and just general off topic stuff with people that have similar interests. Credits and Sportsbook would just be a bonus.

my members spend their virtual 'cash' in the Casino, Arcade, Sportsbook, Stock Trader, Pickem, Squares, Survival Football and Fantasy Football.

It is a week by week pickem game where you pick one team that you think will win that week, if that team wins, you move onto the next week, if your team loses, you are out. You can only use a team once. Last one standing wins.
