XF 2.1 Show 'Search' for guests but ask them to login?

It seems when I disable search for guests it removes the search box completely. Is there a way to disable search for guests but still show the search box and ask them to login?

It would require some form of customisation.

Probably easier just to put a link in the navigation which links to the register form.
