Setting up subscribers to a forum

I'm a paying subscriber to a forum for entertainment purposes. I'd like to create a similar forum for use in my profession with some free access, and also access to premium content for paying subscribers.
Can someone lay out for me how the forum licensing works? Would I need a license for each subscriber to my forum? Would a forum be structured differently for free subscribers versus paying subscribers who have access to premium content? Would I need to purchase a license for each forum subscriber?

Again, I am very green. This is actually my first request for info to educate myself.

Only a single license would be required for one XF installation.

You can have as many forum members as you like with a license.
They can be a mixture of regular (non-paying) members and premium (paying) members.
That is controlled by user group promotions, user upgrades, and permissions.

The short answer is no. As long as all your users are on one site/forum using one domain, it doesn't matter how many of them are paying subscribers or not. You don't have to profit share with XF. :)

As for structuring your site, that's completely up to you. You can set permissions for each forum/node on your site that allow all or only certain members. So you could, for example, create forums that only subscribers can visit.

Thanks. To avoid me asking a 101 questions, can you direct me to a thread laying out the process of set up a discussion board with Xenforo? Steps, timeframe, external agreements to be established (hosting, etc.).

I don't have a budget. I don't know anything about setting up a forum. I have no idea on capital outlay, time investment, or managing a forum once it is up and running. I want to read some articles to gain understand what I am about to get into. That's why I asked for a thread explaining the steps for setting up a forum.

We only supply the forum software.

You would have to purchase a domain (URL) and hosting separately.

As far as installing XF is concerned, it takes about 5 minutes.
It's not really possible to give any time frames or the amount of work involved - it depends how much time you want to spend on it, how complex the site is, etc.

Best place for discussion of this type would be an administration site. One that I can think of is The Admin Zone. It's not as busy as it used to be, but you can still sometimes get assistance with the overall administrative aspects of web presence.
