On the report page when you resolve/reject a report that notice is sent to the reporter, when you're deleting a post it's sent to the person that made the post

Essentially, the author of the content is alerted.

For a post related moderator action such as move, delete, edit, it's the post author.
For a report related action such as reject, resolve, it's the report author.

OK, so this one is murky for me. I reported it because I wanted to handle it that way and have a record, and then I deleted it. I guess my Xenforo suggestion is that I be able to do all this in one place.

Am I correct that I cannot delete the post from inside the Report facility? That would certainly be nice.

No. You must go to the content.
