I can click on a tag and get results, but when I search media there doesn't seem to be a way to obtain any results - regardless if I do it by keyword or by user.
searching yields no results

How long have you been using the Gallery? Have you just imported from another gallery?
If you have recently imported into XFMG you would need to rebuild the search index. You can do that for just the Media by going to Admin CP > Tools > Rebuild Caches and selecting Media from the list.

I've rebuilt all of the search index before, but just did it all again - as well as doing the Media separately by itself.
Still no results.
