Seamless Integration & Customization

Hi XenForo Team,

I’m planning to add a forum to my existing website, Distance24.co.za, and I’d like it to feel fully integrated rather than like a separate platform.

Before purchasing, I wanted to confirm a few things:

  1. Is it possible to integrate XenForo into an existing site so that it shares the same design (header, footer, styles) and does not appear as a separate website?
  2. Are we allowed to modify the XenForo codebase or templates to achieve deeper integration and custom functionality?
  3. Do you support or recommend embedding XenForo within an existing PHP-based system, or is subdirectory integration (e.g., /forum) the best approach?
My goal is a seamless user experience where the forum looks and behaves like a native part of the main site.

Thanks in advance for your guidance.

Best regards,
Zack

1. You will need to copy the design over from different software. That's pretty much the case with most software, not just Xenforo.
2. Yes.
3. For existing sites, install it in a subdirectory. I don't recommend /forum/ or /forums/ because when users view a forum thread listing they get urls like /forum/forum/this-is-a-forum.1/ Put it in something like /community/ so you don't get doubled /forum/ in the url. That's what Xenforo.com does, for example.

Depending on the software you're using, such as WordPress, you can possibly install "bridge" add-ons which let you share a single login between Xenforo and the other software.

Feel free to reach out to me via the link in my signature if you need professional help with the project.

Pagerank is not shared automatically from a main domain to a sub-domain, according to Matt Cutts, Google's former public spokesperson for SEO (his former role is now shared between John Mueller, Gary Illyes and Brian White). A sub-domain has to stand on it's own as if it were a different domain, and gain any ranking solely from links.

If it's on the same main domain, a portion of Google pagerank is automatically shared with the new section.
