Scaleway hosting

that's the cool thing about buyvm offering suggested by @Sam9! they seem to be offering nvme block storage at extremely competitive price. i am glad i found out about this service. you do need to highlight how many TBs of storage you are aiming for. Wasable object storage is quite nice at 1TB for USD 6.

I'm not really sure how they work? Do i need to buy from them ? Confused a bit.

Soyoustart are OVH's budget brand. Support is close to non existent, but good DDoS protection as standard.

Regarding BuyVM, you'd need to order a "slice" (ie a cloud server plan), then order a "slab" with the amount of space you want in the same location as the slice. Currently they offer "slabs" in NY or LV. They also offer a free directadmin license if you need it.

I should add though, their slab offerings are HDD based with massive RAM and NVMe caches. Cheaper than pure SSD or NVMe storage, but with at least some of the benefits, it's a good middle ground.

However as I said, all of the providers I've mentioned are unmanaged providers, they will only assist with hardware issues, not setting up or configuring the server or any software. If you need managed hosting you're probably going to need to increase your budget.

At the moment I am with OVH, so yes , agree support is a bit bad, but good protection.

This might be issue if I'll have to set up everything myself.

Soyoustart would be the same if not worse, I believe Soyoustart (and Kimsufi) support tickets have a lower priority than the main OVH brand, although I have no evidence or this, just based on my personal experience.

How did you handle things with OVH?

Shared hosting. Everything was installed myself. I haven't dealt with VPS/Dedicated long time, and I forgot most stuff.

Can you upgrade the current plan you're on? Or perhaps offload some of the storage needs to object storage as @Chromaniac suggested?

(You can use Wasabi or Backblaze B2 as a cheaper alternative to Digitalocean or AWS)

Alternatively you could get a dedi or VPS and hire someone to do the initial setup for you, leaving only the maintenance to you (eg server updates).

I was looking at that addon, but I don't know how good it is to have forum on one side and images on an other side, how about if I'll decide to merge them, that will be a bit headache .

I can't upgrade my current plan. I just looking ow for options. And yes, this is what will mostly happen , that I will hire someone. But that , after I will find a good solution and plan to stick with.

It is hard to offer advice without knowing exactly what your needs are, what storage needs you have at the moment, growth, how busy your forum is, etc. This is something you can discuss with whoever you hire for the initial setup and configuration.

However, my advice from what you've said so far, if you want something you can keep for a while and can grow with you, I think BuyVM would be the best choice. Slices can be upgraded if you need more CPU/RAM, the slabs are expandable if you need more space, they offer free Directadmin which will make it easier for you to manage the server, and they also have an offloaded mysql service if you need it (costs a bit extra).

I have used DirectAdmin in the past. Always liked it more than cPanel. Should make managing domains and databases very easy compared to managing it all from terminal!

As for having images on a separate platform... It is a pretty normal thing for any platform that hosts a lot of data. And moving attachments back to parent server is not really that big of an issue. You basically just move the data from one platform to another. A single rclone command would do it after configuring the object storage component which is pretty simple. Tons of guides out there that makes it painless.

Something worth mentioning here. B2 had an outage few days ago on their S3 API which essentially killed my forum. Took some hit and trial to realize that it was the object storage that was causing the downtime. Moved all data back to from B2 to my own server in less than 30 minutes.

My forum isn't big, or very busy, but is photography forum on very specific niche.

So buying VM is the same as a dedicated server and vps ? How those slabs are working ?

If you are happy with your current host, just look at the object storage options available. And if they seem cost effective, explore this option. S3 is quite pricey imo. You need to calculate your storage requirement first and then see which option seems most cost effective.

Thats why I’m taking in consideration a host with lots of storage. The link you gave me above, looks perfect for my needs.
