Running out of disk space

We host images and probably have 12 years of images stored. I delete really old stuff from the Media gallery but it doesn't dent the space used.
The website has gone through some updates till we ended up with Xenforo but I have existing links for images. If I set directory permissions to 700 and the website still runs, it's safe to say that nothing in that directory is being used for the website correct?

Thanks, I'm trying to clean up space. I can pay my current host more money for more space but I don't want to spend more.
