Because if their account is posted publicly their email will be picked up by spammers and spammed to hell.

Just got on, so amazing, here is my description of it currently.

"Google+ a combination of Skype(hangouts), Twitter(following) and FB(with correct privacy settings lululul)"

Most people would have assumed you meant email .

considering that people are needing to post gmail addys, 'username' is pretty obvious to anyone that isnt soft in the head.
