Removing forum category from what's new

I currently have the Ignore What's New add-on, which is great. However, it requires folks access the control panel and adjust their settings. I have an app announcement category which overwhelms new posts and I'd like to remove it from showing up in What's New as I think it could detract new users from signing up. Right now, if you click on What's New, you're basically bombarded with app announcements.
