Would this be ideal if you wanted to remove the built in gender requirements and replace it with something like:
http://xenforo.com/community/resources/gender-message-indicators.1048/
So really when you create the custom field, a user picks male/female or undisclosed and an icon appears in additional user info?

Great Add-On! It makes the registration process simple. However, could you please allow the option for users to choose gender inside their Personal Details section? Generally, people are still interested in providing the info, just not at registration.

XF2 doesn't have a core gender field.
It gets converted to a custom user field but you can just delete that if you don't want it.
A search for "Remove location" in the Resource Manager brings up this:
