[rellect] AdBlock Detector [Deleted]

I'm thinking about buying this. Which option is the best to use this?

I was thinking about the "forcing" option.

I don't think a floating message would work. I've seen floating messages around on other forums but half the time i don't even read what the message says or i just click on the X too close it.

The only time i ever read it, is if i am forced too. Most likely i will disable ad-block for a bit to see the forum or just not visit the site.

I use the overlay. They can't ignore that.

This is a very good add on and the author is very responsive to fix any problems that may crop up such as when the ad blockers figure out how to defeat it.

I'm still on the fence. I don't have ads for members so really I'd just be annoying the guests.

The way I look at it the guests that use ad blockers don't contribute anything so what good are they? They are just there for what they can get and offer nothing in return. Many of my ads are pay per exposure as well as pay per click so these guests with ad blockers are costing me money. If I make them mad, so what? I have lost nothing. And some will disable the ad blocker.

If only 5% use ad blockers then maybe it isn't a problem, but it may be more than that.

You can do a survey and find out how many people use ad blockers on your site, here is a link I used:

http://support.buysellads.com/knowl...tage-of-your-visitors-are-using-an-ad-blocker

I'm getting false positives. See this post for screens from a user who has abp disabled for our site, clearly sees ads, and also gets the Adblock notice. ad-block popup

I have found that those users are usually using IE and viewing cached pages. Have them disable their ad blocker then clear their cache completely while NOT viewing your site then restart their browser.

Just to note, I also edited the Adblock text that appears when users have an Adblock enabled that also explains that registered users don't see ads.

They could want to register but get annoyed and leave

That's okay by me. Ads support my forum (and me) and it they just want to take and not support the resource they can leave.

I also serve ads to registered users and use the ad blocker for them too. I sell supporting memberships that eliminates the ads. Since this add on was installed I have sold several supporting memberships when only a very few had purchased them before. In fact I sold more in the past month than in the past few years before using the ad block detector.

I guess it depends on your content and niche. If you have a niche that is not common it will be easier to get users to understand about the ads. If your forum is about content they can get in many places, then it will be harder because they will just go elsewhere..

Good idea. I have two notices, one I serve to guests and one to registered users. The one to registered users tell them they can buy a supporting membership to eliminate the ads and provides them with a link to user upgrades in their control panel.

The notice to guests just asks them to disable their ad blocker. If they don't they can't view much because I use the overlay and do not allow it to be dismissed.

I was contemplating using the overlay and allowing it to be dismissable, but with it reappearing on each new page. I thought that would let guests still view the site but be sufficiently annoying that they will register if they want to come back. I've not implemented it yet though.

I'd also like to do the same to the not-so-active members. Currently I let them dismiss the Adblock notice for 1 hour. Really I'd like a shorter time interval, say 10 or 15 minutes. @rellect is this something that could be implemented, changing the timing in permissions to minutes instead of hours?

I use Pagefair and last year about 5% were using it. Now i am getting around 35-50%

I've noticed some of my favourite forums have started using this add-on.

Talking about last year.. From my experience when i visited a new forum and they use the overlay it always made me mad and i closed it. I never came back.

But this year i've noticed more and more forums are using it. So now i am more used to it and i understand it better.

Now, some of my favourite forums are using overlay. It makes me mad but since i love those forums i have no choice but to add them to the exception list.

This year if i visit new forums and they have overlay. I will disable my ad-blocker to see what the forum is like.. if it has too many pop-ups i will leave. If it has the normal adds that don't pop up. I will probably turn it off for that domain.

Depending on the age group of your forum some people might not know how to turn off ad-blocker.

And i think also depending on the size of your forum. If your forum is big you shouldn't have a problem getting new users even if you have overlay. i think overlay would work fine.

If your forum is small you should start out with a floating message and not overlay.

I forgot my question:

Question: Is there a way to make the message bigger? So you can make it a little more annoying but not annoying that you block everything? I want to add more space at the top and bottom.

Minutes would be a lot better.

Thanks will try this - by disable adblocker do you mean have them disable it for our site, or globally? It's already disabled for our site so maybe just a browser cache clear will fix?

I'm considering adding this. Do those of you who use this have a thread to tell people how to whitelist your forum or is it brutally easy to figure out? I've never blocked ads so don't have any experience on how they work.

I can confirm this using ADB+ in Firefox, it seems like a cache issue of the ADB injected css.
EDIT: I will release an update to address it shortly.

This is planned to be changed in v2.

Yes, you have few style properties to customize.

It's pretty easy to figure out, in most cases it's just clicking on the adblock icon and there you'll see the option.

Just purchased so looking forward to seeing the impact.

I do have a couple of questions about permissions:
If "Can bypass detection:" is set to allow, that means they won't see this, right? I got myself a bit confused.

Also, does the permission of a secondary group override the primary group selection? For example, all my members fall under the "member" user group. Donors are a secondary. I want members to see the notice but not the donors. The ads are already blocked because of a condition within the ad code. I just want to make sure they don't see the notice.

Thanks.
