XF 1.5 Redirection Scripts (vB) and Route Filters

I have a Route Filter for /forums/ -> /forum/ Years ago, vB was within /forums/ and thus redirections scripts are within the /forums/ directory. I recently realised they (redirection scripts) are not working due to the Route Filter having precedence. (which of course makes sense)

If I disable the Route Filter, then I get a 'Page Not Found' error for the Primary navigation link to /forums/ and Nodes to /forums/abc.123/ etc.

What's the best action to correct and get the redirection scripts working again? I still have a number of good SEO external sites with quite old vB links.

The route filter shouldn't really take precedence if the redirect files exist. That would generally mean that the "normal" XF rewrites aren't even triggered. Do you have an example URL that doesn't work? What happens when you go to it?
