Rave reviews!

FWIW, when I am using a forum on which I need to do a lot of reading, I prefer a fixed width. Paragraphs of more than about 750px wide at ~72ppi become very tiresome to read
750/72 = 10.4 inches, or 26.4 cm is what is important to you?

(I am struggling with some design issues at the moment)

P.S. Has this thread gone far enough off topic yet to qualify for a thread split? :D
I've been asking myself that for a few posts...

Ha. Well, that's one way to look at it I suppose. Another is that I am open to good ideas, even if the source is of questionable sanity.

When I was running vB it always had a fluid width, but like some others here, my browser window is never maximized (except on the laptop), so it was always "fixed" for me. But honestly, after using the new layout for a few days I didn't like the fixed width, and my good friend here kept pointing out that it was simple to add the option, so I did. She was right about that.

Unless, of course, there are things like this in the posts:

Pot, kettle, etc.

lol turn sigs off if a little and quite discreet image offends :) As you know we were not talking about sigs, that is a completely different thing.

I am glad you came to your senses about fixed width, regardless of why... :)

hmmmmm..... scratching one idea off my list. :)

From a functionality viewpoint, with smaller avatars, the horizontal post bit (user details from left to right between each post) frees up a bunch of screen width for pictures - and that screen width is very precious to us. We have many many pictures on our forum.

But with the larger avatars, I don't think horizontal post bit will work with xf. Especially when xf hides the user details on the left by default so it does not leave a large amount of wasted vertical space.

Unless you are all on 1024x768 and are posting enormous images this is a non issue Dean :) Xenforo scales the images perfectly so no need to worry about that.

As I am doing your Custom Skin I am not going to let you have fixed width :p You can set it that way if you want to after I hand you the keys ............. if you must. :D

I have signatures disabled for a reason so I tend to avoid forums which use that layout as it's just too much effort trying to separate the actual content.

This is probably the main reason for the dislike of the horizontal layout, it is massively confusing to have to think about if this chuck of horizontal stuff is content or bumph on the poster.... Hence why I expressed the dislike of it so strongly. Anything that detracts from the content or makes it confusing or hard work to read is less than desirable.

And... split away dear Brogan :)

No need to split the thread, this is the nature of organic conversation.

Regarding the vBulletin 3 postbit, it was designed with a 65 pixel avatar in mind, 6 pixels of padding either side and a single pixel border, resulting in around 75 pixels of vertical content between post text. For an age when 800x600 was a common resolution, it made sense to appropriate the horizontal space for post content, including images. It also happens to work really nicely with very small resolutions, such as mobile browsers.

Of course, the time when it made sense as an interface for a forum was more than five years ago, but it made sense then.

ahhh 800x600 those were the days, heheehe.

I am sure it did make more sense back then, when page real estate was at a premium and anything above a 65x avatar was considered pure luxury, I remember one site advertising that they allowed 80x80 avatars lol I have however seen that layout used where the actual chunk of poster info is considerably bigger than the content they posted, resulting in a page full of userinfo with a bit of content you can go mining for if you so desire.

I feel like a heel for my comments, so I again extend an apology for being a brat.

Apology accepted.

You know what, I will give you an apology too, I could definitely have worded my concerns over your original choice of style better in the first place.

Meh, must have been having a cranky day when I posted.

Why do I detest fixed width? Two reasons...

One - I feel completely hemmed in and claustrophobic having to use fixed width skins, I refuse to do it in fact, for example: There is an excellent Admin forum around, even though it is a fine site with good people and discussions.. I cannot abide fixed width skins, truly physically feel sick using them, and whilst that site several choices in themes, they are all fixed width, sadly I cannot post there at all. Some people have said to me that they cannot read great big long strings of text, well I cannot read great big horizontal blocks of text.... different mindsets, left/right brain differences.. I'm a retard, who knows, but I do know I am not alone, with 8 years of providing skins to boards of all levels I have only twice done Fixed width Custom Skins, and I detested every minute of doing them. I have had this discussion with many many people over the years, and lots feel the same way.

.... And Two... it is often control freakiness of the highest order.. dictating what width people will read forums is imho the Admin Nazi-est move out there... if I want 1920px wide text, surely that is my business.... and the argument you don't want to "maintain" two styles is (naturally) spurious... make the default xenforo style available (which is nicely fluid you will notice) then you don't have to do a single thing.. And then, those of your pooor members who like me detest being dictated to in such a fundamental way will have one less control freak thing to object to :)

It costs you nothing, it delivers choice, and everyone is surely a winner.
Kim, I don't know if your opinion changed in those 2 and a half years, but as a designer you should very well know there are good reasons for a fixed width forum, of some which has been addressed here. Many forums today aren't just plain forums, but have some sort of an article section, either integrated with a CMS or a native solution, like XenPorta. You can't have a fluid style in those sections. And you can't have a fixed style for the article section and a fluid style for the forum, because this would be bad design. And regardless of an article section, as Kier said text in fixed width blocks looks generally better.

Your admin nazi analogy obviously is slightly exaggerated as you can interpolate this to colours and fonts too. Surely XenForo must be admin nazis to force the blue background colour in the header on their readers. If I want a red header, surely that is my business. And why do they force Times New Roman and Verdana on us? Where is my Trebuchet MS? You get the point :)
