I think it would be cool to be able to have a widget on the home page that displays thread title and body fields, similar to the quick post feature at the top of nodes.
In the widget I would have only the text fields for the title and the body visible on page load.
Then once either field is focussed, an extra selector for the desired forum and the post buttons could expand and drop down below them.
The forum selector would be a text list that drops down on focus to view a scrollable list. You can then click to select or forum, or start typing, which refines and updates the visible list with each letter typed.
Having a widget like this on the home page would eliminate all the friction between the site loading and getting to the point where you actually start to create some content.
Once you the content is created, you're invested ensuring it gets shared, so are more inclined to then follow through with figuring out forum is most suitable - instead of having to do all that at the beginning, which can be daunting on large forums.
