Question and answer CAPTCHAs

XenForo currently includes a built-in Question and Answer CAPTCHA system, which is a great feature for reducing spam without relying on third-party services. However, at present, it only supports plain text for both questions and answers.

I would like to suggest extending this feature to allow the use of images alongside or instead of text in both questions and answer choices. This would make the CAPTCHA more dynamic, engaging, and resistant to automated bypass methods. For example, presenting a visual question like “Select all images that show a fire exit” or “Which of these signs indicates a hazard?” would offer a more interactive and effective layer of protection. Allowing users to select answers that combine text and images—much like a survey—would further enhance accessibility and comprehension across different user groups.

Additionally, the ability to specify more than one correct answer would increase the complexity for bots while still keeping the task manageable for human users. This flexibility is already seen in several modern CAPTCHA implementations.

An example for this,

While there are third-party CAPTCHA services that offer such capabilities, many are only free up to a limited usage threshold and then require paid subscriptions. For many community forums and independent site operators, this introduces an avoidable cost for something that could be natively supported within XenForo. Given the technical capabilities of the XenForo development team, I believe this enhancement could be implemented efficiently and would offer long-term value to a wide user base.

I hope you’ll consider this feature enhancement in a future release. It would significantly strengthen spam protection while keeping XenForo self-contained and cost-effective.
