Is it necessary to click the excluded usergroups "Revoke" for all? Can't you click "Inherit" since they will not have permission to view node?

To create a private node:

1. Set the node as private
2. Allow the view node permission for the desired user group.

or

1. Revoke the view node permission for the Registered user group
2. Allow the view node permission for the desired user group.

The second option will only work if all of the users are in the Registered user group (as the primary).
