The outgoing feeds obey forum permissions of the currently logged in user.

To clarify, is it possible to use an external RSS reader to subscribe to an RSS feed of a private forum if you have access to it? Or would this only work with the RSS functionality built into a web browser that you're actively logged into the site with?

    As Jake said...
The ability to view an RSS feed is wholly dependant on the permissions you have as a member (or guest) on an XF forum. Same as all other content.

Thanks. I'm not questioning the content of the RSS feeds. I understand the content of the feed will contain the resources that the user has access to.

I'd like to know if a standalone RSS reader exists that would be able to access & authenticate to a private Xenforo forum. Since the security is coming from the web application (and not the web server), I'm assuming this won't work, right?

Unless the reader has the ability to log in and provide a user name and password, no.
