Are we correct in understanding that after the first 12 months if the support is allowed to lapse you have to pay the full price to get another 12 months support for Xenforo and resources.

After the first 12 months, you can continue to use the software but to receive support and updates you would need to renew. $40 would renew the support and upgrades for XenForo for an additional 12 months. That price increases slightly depending on the number of official add-ons you have. Details here:
