Duplicate Post tracking issues

I posted this in as part of another bug report and was brushed off as standard functionality (moderator opinion, not developer opinion). I am re-posting and respectfully request a developer opine before it is classified as "not a bug". I am having issues with post tracking for some threads. For example, I clicked on the "REST API" thread (with new replies) and it took me to page 1 instead of the first unread post. Note there is a "Jump to new" button. IT KNOWS there are unread posts and is fully capable of taking me to the first unread post as evidenced by the first attachment. Why doesn't it simply take me to the first unread post by default? I do understand post tracking has a limited lifespan, but again, the lifespan has not expired for the "Jump to new" button. Clicking on a thread should behave the same as clicking on "Jump to new" when there are new posts. I believe this is a bug.

Clicking on the thread takes me to page 1 with a "jump to new" button:

Jump to new takes me to the first unread post:

TLDR: why doesn't it just take me to the first unread post to begin with?
