I have just purchased Xenforo. It it OK to set it up on my existing site as a test forum where only i will have access to it then move it to a new domain in a few days ???

Just to clarify, the terms of the license permit you to install it once for your live site and an additional installation for testing purposes.

Before deploying the Software, you must register in the XenForo.com customer area the address (URL) at which You will use the License. This URL must be kept up-to-date. You may create a single additional test installation for the purpose of testing the Software. Any test installation of this kind must be password protected, and access to it must be limited to You and Your website staff.

Hi Brogan.
I dont have the URL where it will be used permantly yet. I am still waiting for it to be registered.
I do have a site that i can test and learn how to drive it on where only i will have access to it. I have registered it to that site.
I just wanted to know whether i can move it to a new URL once it is registered.

You answered this in your Pre-Sales FAQ post.
Q: Am I allowed to change the URL where my forum is installed?
A: Yes, you must update your account details accordingly in the Customers section.

Thanks for your reply :)

Wi11ie, if you do not have a site URL, you can use http://localhost (License Details -> Site URL). Once your domain name is registered you can change the URL of your site in the customer area (edit details).

example of what i do and i hope it is ok :/
my site is http://myanimeisland.com which is live
my dev/test site is http://xf.myanimeisland.com which is never open and never will be

They both point to the same address.

As long as you password protect your test/dev site so that it is not accessible to the public, then it is ok.

i am assuming keeping the board permanently closed for maintenance qualifies as 'password protected'.

I was in the same boat. Couldnt wait for the new domain so I got it all set up on one of my current domains then moved it over once I got the new domain. Just enter the info on your member account here.

What we do is spawn a duplicate of the live site (we're on a highish end cloud hosting solution, like a super VPS), it's still configured to the live domain, but since it's a different IP it's not accessible unless you have an entry in your hosts table to pre-empt the name resolution. Then both Susan and I can work with the dev site via our Parallels environment, while OSX continues to hit the live site. Means we never have to worry about any fully qualified URLs breaking during testing, it's a dead accurate representation of how the live site will respond.

Take about an hour, hour and a half to take a new snapshot of the live site, and about the same amount of time to create a new instance based on the snapshot, but it's all automated.

It's not .htaccess protected, but pretty dang hard to get to unless you:

A: Know the IP for the testbed.
B: Know enough about what you're doing to circumvent the name resolution. Not that that's terribly difficult, but it does mean that the testbed is really never seen "in the wild". :)
