PNG files - too big.

I noticed some huge multi megabyte PNG files in a post recently. Unlike jpgs they don't get resized on the fly. I've removed it from the allowable upload list for now but it's affecting my ipad users.

Is there any regular server function that could convert them to jpg that an add-on could possibly be built around?

Or any other suggestions?
