How the U.S. forces killed Osama bin Laden

http://edition.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/asiapcf/05/02/bin.laden.raid/

...

The U.S. team was at the compound for about 40 minutes, the officials said. There were no casualties on the American side, although a U.S. helicopter crashed during the raid due to mechanical problems. The helicopter was then destroyed for security reasons, senior administration officials said.

...

The official said only a small group of people inside the U.S. government knew about this operation ahead of time. Another official said a "small U.S. team" was involved in the operation; but the official would not confirm any U.S. military involvement.
However, a senior defense official said U.S. Navy SEALs were involved.

He's used doubles in the past.

Our news sources here are saying that they waited a week for DNA tests to come back, to be sure it was Bin Laden, as he has used doubles in the past. Once they got the results, Obama gave the order to move in, and he was killed this morning during a firefight.

Yea it seems the reports were mixed as they were just coming out. The DNA test was performed after the killing of Bin Laden which is why the President's speech was held up a bit making sure the DNA matched what the US had from his dead sister.

His demise should be welcomed by all who believe in peace and human dignity,” Obama said, adding: “And on nights like this one, we can say to families who have lost loved ones to al-Qaeda’s terror: Justice has been done.

US tracked couriers to an elaborate bin Laden compound

First a name, then an extraordinary house with high walls — and no telephone or Internet. Bin Laden and a son are killed in a firefight.

Looks like they tracked his couriers and that is how they got him !

In 2007, the U.S. learned the man's name.
In 2009, "we identified areas in Pakistan where the courier and his brother operated. They were very careful, reinforcing belief we were on the right track."
In August 2010, "we found their home in Abbottabad," in an isolated area.
"When we saw the compound, we were shocked by what we saw: an extraordinarily unique compound."
The plot of land was roughly eight times larger than the other homes in the area. It was built in 2005 on the outskirts of town, but now some other homes are nearby.

Very interesting article !

Osama bin Laden killed: how the deadly US raid unfolded

Osama bin Laden was killed by a bullet fired by a United States Navy SEAL during a 40-minute helicopter assault on a fortified compound believed to have been purpose-built to hide the al-Qaeda leader.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/wor...n-killed-how-the-deadly-US-raid-unfolded.html

The crucial breakthrough came last August when the compound where the courier lived along with his brother, another courier, was pinpointed and President Barack Obama briefed. The compound was in an affluent area of Abbotabad where many retired Pakistani military officers lived.
Initially built in a secluded area at the end of a dirt road, more homes had sprung up nearby. But the compound was about eight times larger than any other residence. It was protected by two security gates and 12-18ft high walls.

The key breakthrough in the hunt for Bin Laden came, according to the White House briefers, when four years ago post 9-11 detainees helped U.S. forces identify key Al Qeada couriers. But it was not until two years ago the US identified the courier, that along with his brother, was involved with maintaining the Abbotobad compound.

By the middle of March, President Barack Obama and his national security staff were having regular meetings on the mission. The final Presidential order to go operational was given Friday morning.

Islamabad: Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden's six children and two wives have been arrested in Pakistan, a media report said.

Osama bin Laden was killed on Monday in a security operation in Pakistan's Abbottabad city, less than 100 km from the Pakistan capital.

Sources said Osama's six children, two wives and four close friends were arrested during a search operation launched early Monday morning by the Pakistani forces in a mountainous area located some 60 km north of Pakistan's capital Islamabad, Xinhua qouted Dunya TV as saying.

Good news certainly, but Al Qaeda will continue on without him and the US can expect a series of reprisal attempts.

Definitely a moral victory though and a victory for the US Military as well for what appears to be a brilliantly conducted strike.

Thousands of people outside the Whitehouse, chanting "USA USA USA". :p

There's a lot of comments on a UK board finding this odd, and comparing it to scenes of similar celebrations by extremist Islamists over the years over attacks on the west.

I guess we just do things differently in the UK.

Anyway, great news that he's dead and is now just fish food.*

* Assuming the reports of him already being buried at sea are correct.
