XF 2.1 Newly Registered Users set to user_group_id=0

This is strange. Someone messaged me saying he couldn't post or do anything. I looked at his profile and it showed his primary user group is "Administrative". I got worried, wondering how that happened. Nothing in the logs. I looked at his user account in the db, and his user_group_id was set to 0. So Adminstrative was just the first one in the dropdown.

But I still don't know how he got to 0? The DB shows we have 122 users set to user_group_id=0. Register dates ranged from 9/19/2019 to today.

I upgraded to XF2.1 from 1.5 on 9/19.

any ideas?

.have you imported user groups?
No. Not since vbulletin migration years ago. Timing wise it seems to go along with a 2.1 related upgrade - I opened a ticket with tapatalk.

if anyone is running tapatalk on 2.1, can you check your xf_user table?

Late post, but I've seen this twice now, and both times this is TapaTalk that appears to be causing it. user_group_id is 0 for members who sign up through their application.
