XF 2.2 Newbie, question about page layout

Is there a way to modify the home page layout where I could add different content as modules or blocks? Similar to what you can do with vb5. Also add my own menu tabs and links

For example, i would like to add content block at the top of the page where I could load custom page or different content. Say, something like a gallery and maybe latest 5 images. etc ..

just curious. Really not new to XF and looking for solutions that probably exist already.

Widgets can be used for that.
