New posts in very old thread is out of order

I experienced this a few times and can reproduce it on a test board with no addon.
I have a thread that started in 2011 and last post in 2013.
I added a new post in this thread and the new post is in position #11 instead of 14.
You can see the latest post "testing" has a different type_data [] which is different than the rest.

Seems like rebuild threads (rebuild positions and post counter) will fix this issue.
But why do I have to run this manually when people post in an old thread?

This is going to be due to the inconsistency (the first reply is position 4, etc). Unless new threads experience this issue it's likely the result of an old bug, an add-on, or manual database manipulation. Rebuilding post positions should resolve this for good.
