XF 2.3 New License for same website

Hello!

My current website and license, the owner is not really available anymore and I don't have access to the email she used for the account and can't get in contact with her to transfer the license to me. However, the site that the license was for has been handed down to me to run. But I don't have access to the current license for it. If I were to buy a new license, would I be able to use it for the same site? Or would I have to build a new site entirely? Is there a way to switch the license of the site if I were to buy a new one? Thank you!

This is a question best answered by XF staff but my understanding is that the licence key is embedded in the php files you download from XF and upload to your site.

As a result all you need to do is upload the php files from your new licence replacing all of the existing files and you'll be fine.

I've done this myself on a dev server when I used the wrong install files to set up a test site

Would that cause me to lose any data? I know there's always a risk, but what I mean is would it delete all my forum's posts and users and such?

If you overwrite the files, you won't lose anything.
The only one you shouldn't overwrite, however, is the config file.

No - it should be a non-destructive operation. Make sure you download the "upgrade" files from your new license, not the "full install" files.

Obviously, do a full backup of all your files and your database first, just in case.

Thanks so much, can anyone give me a step-by-step way on how to do all that when I do purchase a new license? I'm not very savvy with this kind of thing.

Just run the 'upgrade' instructions in the readme. Odds are you're out of date anyway, so run the update and take the new version.

What version are you on now? might need to check for addon compatibility/etc.

I just updated it a few days ago before I got locked out of the account. So it's 2.3.10 right now.
