New host

In my quest to find a new host, (currently speaking to one now) I have been fiddling around on my server end to see what - how and where I will need to move to the new server.

I also wanted to give the new host some insights on the size and traffic my site requires and utilizes.

I found some Interesting data and not sure what to make of it. Please feel free to jump in! If it even means anything at all!

Below is the last few months of traffic info. I went from Vbulletin to Xenforo starting in Sept. 2013. My page views almost doubled in some cases. "Hits" went down by pretty much half. Bandwidth dropped slightly- everything else was about average.

Wonder why. Any input good or bad would be appreciated.

Your page hits probably went up because your members were "exploring" the new software or looking for features they were accustomed to with the old software. Bandwidth probably went down because your software is clean/unbloated, without all the add-ons you had with VB. Hits reflect "total files requested", so it is related to bandwidth, which also went down, probably due to less add-ons being installed, I'm guessing. The fact that pages went up but bandwidth and hits went down, indicate a leaner/cleaner system. In other words...less file requests per page visited.

This assumes that smilies, images and other attachments were all imported and are being displayed correctly. Using sprites also reflects positively on these stats.

I am currently looking at http://www.canspace.ca - another member here also hosts there and is very happy and I like the performance of his site.

I am from the US- I would imagine it doesn't matter that the host is in Canada?

Well- I am currently with hostgator.com paying 10 a month on a shared server. My speed is horrible- first with Vbulletin and now with Xenforo.

I would imagine 20 bucks max.

Yes, that would be no problem at all. 25k unique a month would not effect your load speed at all. We hosts sites like http://www.turbobuick.com/forums/ that receive that sort of traffic daily Backups are indeed 100% automated. They are done hourly via R1Soft and stored remotely. The xenBasic plan for $14.95 a month would be fine for those stats you gave.

I would search at WHT for a new host, asking here is really limiting your options.

WebHostingTalk is a forum for hosting, read over all the reviews. Moving host can be a big deal, you don't want to do it twice because you jumped the gun.

Good advice, but also take everything on WHT with a grain of salt. While there are some great members and hosting companies represented there, it is full of hosting companies that don't know what they're doing - and love to oversell their services for $2/mo.

That's about when I joined as well.
What I usually do is get a list of 5 or so host that I'm thinking about using and then just reading every review I can find.
See how the host treats their customers, see what they did to resolve any issues presented, see how mature they acted in the public forums.

It's a long process, but worth the time in my opinion.

Your resources shouldn't be a problem with any host. The problem you are seeing is because you are with HostGator, who was purchased by a group called EIG. They are known for buying relatively large hosts and running them into the ground.

You're now on one of their ridiculously-overloaded servers in the EIG datacenter in Provo, UT. Avoid the EIG brands (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endurance_International_Group) and the "unlimited" hosts (there is no such thing) and you should be just fine.
