My partner wants to use vBulletin 5. I want to use xenForo.

Can you guys give me some features and advice i can use to convince him to change his mind. He used the awesome vb3 back in the day and still thinks that vbulletin is still awesome.

He's wrong. It's simple.
There are dozens, if not hundreds, of threads about the advantages of XF here. But if your partner doesn't want to be convinced, he likely will not be...

You can probably make VB do what you want it to do. But where is it going? Are the developers very responsive to the users?

Does he still have license access to the vBulletin forums? Tell him to take a moment and go to their web site, look at the license discussion forums and read the posts there. Tell him to spend at least 20 minutes reading through and then ask him how he feels. If after reading all of that he still feels the need to go with vBulletin tell him about the instant cost savings on blood pressure medication alone.

Jokes aside, tell him he's silly and move forward.

Show him these two YouTube videos. If he doesn't change his mind after these two videos, get a new partner.

I had a conversation with someone from the grey area of the internet...I asked them what they thought of the newest installment of vB, his answer was this...

There is no point in cracking an egg that is already broken.


Friends don't let friends run vBulletin.

vB is still the market leader in commercial forum software, but only because they have been around a lot longer than xF, the vast majority of sites using vB are using vB3 or vB4, only about 0.6% are using vB5.

That should set off alarm bells!

Running VB5 will be suicidal from what I have read on the VB forums. Your partner should go through all the threads there and then on the sites which have migrated to VB5. I still visit VB forums often to get the sadistic pleasure of them going down. @digitalpoint can throw more light on this as I have seen him making some pointed posts there.

To be fair to them, the overall direction they wanted to take is admirable and I was impressed, however the speed with which they are going about it is too slow.

Also do not go by what is promised and instead look at what is present. Saying this coz lots of features were announced for VB4 which were never delivered. Even the VB4 maintenance release was completely dropped in favor of VB5. This when it was showing hundreds of bugs as fixed. Imagine going all the way and stopping just before the finish line.

Even with a handicap of missing months of development at XF, it is a much user friendly software to work with. Whenever I had switched a forum software or done a version upgrade in the past there used to be so many cribbing members. But when we switched to XF, all I got was wow and awesome.

Lastly, if you still want to switch to VB, I have a VB5 license I desperately want to get rid of. :ROFLMAO:

There is no need to go to a kind of biased forum like XF in order to get suggestions why not to buy vB 5 license. Please, tell your friend to click on a home made threads that are out there in zillions:

The lack of support in major browsers (IE10!!!!) and mobile platforms would cause customers to go out and change their software for a more responsive one, either XF, IPB, or whatever else is out there.

Good luck for your friend. Bring him to feel how long it takes to load a page on www.vBulletin.com/forum/ when you're logged in (He should be logged in, and that's the point when it starts to be so slow that you want to die). In addition, tell him to make a search for a topic. Moreover, ask him to surf from his mobile phone for 15 minutes here and there.

Lol... show him vbulletin.com? If he still thinks it's awesome, it's probably not a bad decision to part ways with him anyway.

Put it this way... I have yet to see a single part (even a small part) of vBulletin 5 that actually works.

It's kind of sad what's happened to vBulletin. It used to be a really great piece of software, and I'm thankful it was around because I used it as the framework for my site for many, many years. But every aspect of it has become utter garbage.

About 2 years ago, I predicted vB5 would be the last version released (either just closing up shop or selling it off before vB6). And I still feel that way.

Again... just plain sad. :(

IB lost site of the scope of their software long ago. They no longer have any clue what it is or what is wrong or what it's for. It's like watching a slow motion video of someone losing their grip on a piece of fine china. There's no chance of them grasping it again and your mind can project the eventual crash and splash. You just have to wait some more till it actually concludes it's progression to it's demise. tick tock tick ....


So would you buy that piece of china as you watched it slip away?

Well all I know is the forums that are for licensed members only over at vBulletin. Well they have MANY members complaining how they wish they never upgraded to vB5.

So based off those comments, I would say vB5 is not the way to go.

vB4 is okay... but it seems like they have reduced the time spent on vB4 over to vB5.

My advice is to look at vB3/4 and XF and compare the needs of your new website/community.

Also ask around and talk to various different vB and XF users and you will get some input on what they think of the software too.
