My Challenge - will you take it?

There are so many people who go without, or with very little, at Christmas time. I have made it a point, every year for the past 10 or so, to provide one needy family with a ham and all the fixins' for Christmas. I don't usually cook the dinner, but provide all that they need to do it themselves. I will confess that last year I did cook the dinner because the lady that I found wasn't able to get around, and had no family to do for her. So I cooked a meal for her, and took it all to her along with a small christmas gift. I'm not tooting my own horn here, just letting you know how simple and easy it is to do for someone else at Christmas.

This year, I challenge you to do the same. Purchase the meat, whether a ham, a turkey, etc. and all the sides, complete with a pie, or cookies or a cake, for dessert, and find a needy family to give it to, and deliver it to them, or make it available for picking up.

It's the season of giving. For all that you've been blessed, be a blessing to someone else this year.

I have for the last few years donated to various hard-struck animal rescues for the winter period. This year will be no different While some people genually are in hard possitions, my faith in humanity is not high on my list of things, and I have seen first hand that many people would rather take the money and spend it on drugs / alcohol / tabbaco. As such I give to those who have no voice.

I commend your efforts, but where I live, many (not all, but most) of these people need to help themselves first before I would consider helping them.

I bet this makes me sound very heartless, but its how I feel.

Which is precisely why I do not give them money.

However, I comment your efforts on behalf of our furry friends, and encourage you to continue, if you'd rather do that.

I do, I actually adopted 2 last year, and 2 this year.



The large one is buzz, the small one is spade. When I got spade she was estimated to be 9 years old, a very old lady, she died naturally in summer, buzz unfortunately due to his large size developped a heart condition and we had to have him put to sleep.

The new pair is Ella (grey) and Motse (white)



Not sure what im going to be coming back with when I go to do the rounds this year!

I donate to a few charities, one that supplies meals to hard-pressed families, and one that gives out toys and/or things for school for children in need.

The first is through my work, as they're one of the larger contributors to the program (I think about 95% of my work donates part of their paycheck for October-December to the charity), and the other was one started by a friend relative about 15 years ago, that I have been contributing too, as well as helping out with various things.

I think this is a great idea. My wife and I always donate each year whether it is just $10 or $50 to at least one or two causes. My wife works for the county and she deals with medical assistance clients a lot and it is frustrating how many people abuse the system while our vets are turned down because they make $600 a month. That is ridiculous and I don't want to get wound tight about it and ruin the thread. Anyway we will not be donating money this year to any causes but we will use your suggestion and provide a meal to at least two thankful and needful veteran families.

GOOD for you! My son's father is a veteran, and he'll be donating a meal to a local veteran this Christmas.

Selfless giving is one of the greatest blessings not only to the recipient but to the giver. I applaud all who do so. Last year this time my family and I were in the midst of moving out of our home and had been struggling mightily. I saw this story in our local paper and was so moved in my heart to find a way to give this man and his family some money. After talking to my family we all agreed that we would give up presents for one another and give him the money we would have spent on ourselves and let me tell you, we had the greatest Christmas we have ever had as a family when we did. I cherish the letter this family wrote us and the pictures the kids drew for us in thanks. They are a part of my family's Christmas decorations now. I encourage everyone to find a way to show someone else some kindness and love this Christmas...it will bless you more than I could ever describe

Well done Peggy. This is the true spirit of Christmas, sadly downed in a wave of commercialism and greed these days.

A few years ago I had the misfortune after some "life issues" to spend a Christmas alone and let me tell you, it isn't fun. It's the worst time of year for family problems, depression and stress, so selfless acts of kindness to those less fortunate are what helps the world go round.

Been there, done that, the Christmas after my first divorce. It was then that I determined to help at least one person or one family every Christmas to not do without, for at least that one day, like I had to.

Thats sweet. Ive never donated food (if I cooked it, it would be a punishment. lol), but I have donated to Toys for Tots.

It's a nice idea Peggy. I do something similar for Thanksgiving. I donate Turkeys to families in need through a church. They are frozen and they are thankful I don't cook them!
