A lot of addons use what I believe is like the XFRM framework to add items (correct me if I'm wrong), but this is very limiting in the sense that 1 item has to be unique to 1 category.
Not going to name addons, but I'll give two good examples.
Classifieds
To monetize listings even more, they could charge for additional category placement, much like many marketplaces already do.
Blogs
Some articles fall into more than one category. WordPress allows multiple categories, alongside tagging.
And while I dont have,
XFRM
I can see instances where items can fall into multiple categories as well.
I think that the XF system is limiting this potent feature in addons, but don't know if this is a XF or XFRM suggestion...
