Messenger [Paid] 1.1.7

No permission to buy ($15.98)
I have a need for a replacement for Zoom actually so I’m wondering exactly how far this function can be stretched, while understanding the limitations (and what might be able to be done to reduce such limitations). Can you elaborate?

Also, are there any limitations to either the video calling feature on mobile?

For that matter, are there limitations on how the messenger (chat) part works on mobile? Mainly from a UI perspective.

That is a fair question. I would not currently market Messenger as a full Zoom replacement because the calling system is browser-to-browser WebRTC mesh, so it is best suited to private and smaller group calls rather than large conferences.

Mobile calling and chat are both supported, although things like background video, screen sharing and larger calls can still depend on the phone and browser being used. The chat UI itself is fully responsive and designed to work properly on mobile.

There is also plenty more planned, including improved Calls 2.0 features, send later/reminders, richer shared content, messaging power tools, trust and safety features, bots/integrations, localisation and accessibility improvements.

Those features are planned to roll out progressively throughout the year though, not as one giant batch update.

Eggy updated Messenger with a new update entry:

Messenger 1.0.7 Released

This update focuses on stability, permissions and runtime reliability.

Changes include:

  1. Improved suspension enforcement across Messenger actions
  2. Strengthened group chat permission handling
  3. Group feature switch now enforced consistently
  4. Improved presence feature-state handling across backend and UI
  5. Corrected blocking logic so block direction is handled properly
  6. Tightened fallback polling and call polling feature enforcement
  7. Fixed XenForo LESS compilation...

Hey @Eggy does this work as a type of 'presence' detector also? Like a more 'real time' way to view who's on your site and when they log on/off???? Thanks for the help.

Yes, Messenger does include presence detection. While Messenger is open it refreshes presence regularly and can show users as online, away, offline or using a manual status such as busy, based on Messenger activity and XenForo session activity. It also respects presence privacy settings.

It is not a full login and logout history tool though, so it will not keep an exact record of every time somebody signs in or leaves the site.

Just an FYI... if a site is NOT using 'Friendly URLs', messenger will throw a (200) error.
This was not mentioned and should have been. I will get an update out to support both friendly and non-friendly.

Apologies for this, the issue was caused by Messenger not handling sites with Friendly URLs disabled correctly so thanks for letting me know. This has now been fixed and released in version 1.0.8 and shouldn't persist anymore :-)

Awesome support.... another issue i'm seeing.

Messenger settings pop-up, under Preferences at the bottom, nothing is clickable or fillable. (see screenshot)

Eggy updated Messenger with a new update entry:

Eggy Messenger 1.0.9 released

Eggy Messenger 1.0.9 is now available.

This update focuses on issues reported from 1.0.8, including fixes to the Messenger Settings interface, improved Last Seen privacy handling and realtime updates, and corrected friend request privacy options.

Last Seen changes now update properly in active conversations, including conversations between members who are not Messenger friends.

If you are running 1.0.8, updating to 1.0.9 is recommended.

Thanks for spotting this. The settings issue is fixed now, and while going through it I also found a couple of other problems with Last Seen and friend request privacy, so I fixed those at the same time. It should now look like this :-) 1.0.9 is now available to download.

Pretty sure the error has to do with a blank user group limit page in admin.

Thanks again for reporting this. I tracked the error down to the Messenger user group limits template.

The template was using:

Code:
<xf:set var="$group" value="$row.group" />
<xf:set var="$p" value="$row.perm" />

That caused XenForo to treat those values as strings rather than evaluating the actual template variables, so when the template later tried to read something like:

Code:
{$p.friend_limit}

it triggered the Cannot access offset of type string on string error. I’ve corrected it in 1.1.0 to use XenForo’s proper expression syntax:

Code:
<xf:set var="$group" value="{{ $row.group }}" />
<xf:set var="$p" value="{{ $row.perm }}" />

I apologise for the amount of beta testing you’ve ended up going through tonight, and I really appreciate you sticking with it. Messenger 1.1.0 has now been released to resolve this issue.

I fully support this suggestion. Adding loading="lazy" for embedded audio and video would reduce the initial page load, save visitors’ bandwidth, and improve performance (y)

I'd like to propose a few things for inclusion:
  1. Widget - use the presence detection to have a widget that shows which members are online (real time)
  2. Ability in Admin to enable/disable whether a user can be 'invisible'
  3. Ability to move/adjust the placement of the messenger bar, not just have it in the lower right corner. (can hack this but should be admin adjustable)
  4. Xenforo notification that you've received a friend request

They’re all great ideas. It’s customer feedback and ideas like these that really shape the direction Messenger takes.

So far we’ve got lazy loading audio on the list, and all of these ideas will be going into the next planned upgrade as well. They’re not just being considered, I intend to include them all.

Eggy updated Messenger with a new update entry:

Messenger 1.1.1 – Built From Your Feedback

A huge thank you to everyone who has been using Messenger, testing it and sending in ideas.

Messenger is very much being shaped by the people actually using it. Each upgrade is being driven by real user feedback rather than adding features for the sake of it, and 1.1.1 is a good example of that.

This update focuses heavily on presence, positioning, notifications and performance, with several of the changes coming directly from suggestions made by customers.
