Add-on 'Like - Reply - Share' for Thread Listing and Recent Activity

Currently, there is no like, reply or share link or buttons for threads from the thread listing, What's New? section and Recent Activity. If we could like, reply and share from these pages then user activity would definitely go up. These intuitive, important and overlooked features come standard on Facebook and would help lower the learning curve of new members browsing and posting on Xenforo forum software for the first time.

Right now the only addon that address 1/3rd of this issue is this one but it does not cover the Recent Activity section, which is equally important because the same template (news_feed) used for the site-wide Recent Activity page is the same template used for the news feed featured on member's profile pages. The Like Reply Share addon will require php work for both the thread listing and recent activity page.

Luckily after asking around Chris Deeming is willing to create this Like Reply Share addon and has already started on it but I cannot afford his asking price at the moment. Eventually I will but it may take me a couple weeks. Would any of you be kind enough to help fund the creation of this addon? The total cost for Like Reply Share addon is $200, so if you could donate to me for this addon you will receive the addon as well. After the donation amount is met this thread and first will be updated with the news of the donation requirement being met, further donations won't be accepted and any excess amount will be sent back. After the addon is completed it will be a paid Resource in the resource manager which Chris has not yet set the price for. The developer has already done a great work for me in the past, the website as a whole, has an honest reputation and will definitely get this done in a timely manner

Like Reply Share will be featured in:

  • Threads in thread list
  • Threads in What's New
  • Threads in Recent Activity
  • Posts in Recent Activity
  • Profile Posts in Recent Activity
That will be the basic package for the addon.

I have a lot of addons on my site and as a result, I am requesting that he expand the addon so that other addons that are featured in the Recent Activity section will also be able to be Liked, Replied or Shared. Such addons that I would like to include are Post Ratings, Bookmarks, XFR User Albums, XenMedio, XenCarta, Showcase and Sportsbook. Integrations with other addons will cost extra.

Like - Reply - Share was inspired by Like, Comment or Share for Facebook.

Notice these three buttons are not on Xenforo but will be available for thread listing, what's new and recent activity. The following attachments are what xenforo looks like without Like - Reply - Share and will be where Like - Reply - Share will be applied to.

I have a test version of his addon working on my site without the share button, probably don't need the share button at all. The addon will be called Like Everywhere or Like Reply Everywhere. Don't have it working on xenporta yet. I had to create my own modification to get the reply working on xenporta. I guess I'll just make this thread a development log to keep you updated. No one has contacted/donated me about this addon yet. It's just me using it for now.

By default, the like and reply buttons for this addon are hidden from guests but I've altered it on my site to show on specific pages because I want guest to know those features are there in hopes that they are tempted to join everytime they click one of those links and realize they would have to sign up to participate.

You can see these buttons in action on my home page www.8thos.com and in my Global Chat Forum for example: http://www.8thos.com/forums/the-rec-room.16/

K more news! The developer has let me know that it is okay to say who he is. He was really busy with other stuff and didn't think he would be able to do it.

He created an addon recently that has way more important than any other addon he's working on at the moment.

You know... the baby addon. Although the baby addon is easy to create, they're not that easy to develop and take lots of love and care.

Can you guess which developer it is by now?

1. I don't understand the thread likes - which user receives the like - the one that created the thread? So it would be similar to opening the thread and giving a like to the first post? Does it show the number of likes? (eg. Like (4) . Reply Edit).

2. Why would a user reply to a thread from the thread list, without having entered and reading it?

3. What is the operation/functionality when I click the Share link?

1. Yeah it's a liking of the thread, technically. So the first post of the thread is the target for the Like.

2. Maybe the thread title is a direct question, or maybe they have previously read the thread and have more to add.

1. The Like applies to the first post to the thread. It also lets you unlike it as well.

2. Ever heard of 'Random Thoughts' or 'What Are You Listening To Now' type threads? Well what about threads that ask you a question 'Have you ever smoked weed before?' 'Do you prefer Windows or Mac?' etc. Also applies for news threads. ex: 'McAffee, founder of McAfee Internet Security, accused of shooting some dude in the head' and your post would be an update if the thread is several hours or days old.

3. It's the same permalink share options you see in a regular thread.

#1 - Does it mean that the first post author's Like count rises, and if I view the posts it shows the Likes whetehr received from post or thread?

#2 That gives an idea, thanks. Not convinced that users would do it directly from here though without opening the thread firstly. If I click Reply at this threads view level, what is the functionality? Open the thread and drops the cursor at the bottom in the quickly reply? Opens an overlay?

#3 So Share and Permalink (right beside it) do exactly the same thing? I think that will affect Google ranking with two links close to each other going to the exact same url/destination?

1. Yes the first post author's like count rises or lowers if you un-like your like. Does not show the likes received from the first post.

2. It opens a reply to the thread. Like the real reply page. For instance, click on this: Reply = That's the link it generates. Replies are handled the same as my Reply from Thread Display addon.

3. The like, reply and share buttons are three different destinations. The permalink opens an overlay which is acceptable by Google's standards, even if it's close to the thread or reply link.

Right beside it? The Share link will appear in the thread listing whereas normally it would be found in the bottom right corner of each post. How would this affect Google? The two links are nowhere near each other.

Actually i personally think this would be pretty sweet and better UI for thread view then the current default techniques. I alread have FB Twitter and Google Share buttons disabled and only rely on the Permalink overlay method for sharing and that is very obscure.. I suppose this could be easily remedied with a cpl template edits and a phrase change. Hmm i guess i need to do some investigating this thread gave me a good idea and a solution to a pretty serious problem ive been struggling with.

Is it possible to have the Like show the qty of likes received? I also like how FB puts the dot to slightly separate each.
From "Like Reply Edit" to "Like (7) Reply Edit". Exactly you see at http://www.8thos.com/popular/ in the 'Posts with Most Likes' section.

If so, count me in for $25 contribution/donation.

This is possible. Of course the number of first post likes is already available if you hover over the thread stats but there's no harm to expose it elsewhere.

Yup, I think exposing it like this will give more interest and usage as users will see a list of threads and want to go and see why it has 7 likes etc, and +1 their like too.

Who do I donate/pay? Hit me up for the $25 when it's done ;)

Donate to me. When I have enough in my paypal from money I put in myself and from donations I'll pay him to finish the addon and release it. https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=QVN35A3NZSRBY

Such addons that I would like to include are Post Ratings, Bookmarks, XFR User Albums, XenMedio, XenCarta, Showcase and Sportsbook. Integrations with other addons will cost extra. So for those extra addon additions, I don't know if he means pay on top of the development costs or as a special addon that you pay him directly such as for Jaxel's premium media site services for example.

Sorry, I'll need some more visibility/understanding than that before I kick-in money on an open-ended non-deadline add-on without anything to show for it.
You said in the OP that it's $200 to completely deliver. How much are you looking to get from donations? Will contributions be ceased/refused after the total donation/contribution is met? Will it then remain a closed add-on, or be further released (sold or free)? Who owns the code for this add-on? If it's upgraded/extended, will all contributors get the upgrade version?

And how about we run a tally of committed contributions here, and once the total contributions you are looking for is met everyone hands-over their committed amount and a deadline is given that the completed add-on will be available within the next xx days/weeks?

K I edited the first post to explain all that.

The total cost for Like Reply Share addon is $200, so if you could donate to me for this addon you will receive the addon as well. After the addon is completed it will be a paid Resource in the resource manager which Chris has not yet set the price for.
