You don't have to buy kits, you can still buy general bricks.Legos should be something you build up, have fun destroy it and build something new the next day
They sell just the huge bundle of legos, or less specific kits still. I don't live far from Legoland and my dad has been hired in the past to do some props for them for advertising purposes (and is friends with some of their engineers) so I get in fairly often. The store there has a huge selection of legos.I disagree as to legos are better today, now-a-days you can't just buy a pack of legos and let your imagination do your work you get kits that have parts specifically molded for that kit and if you lose a piece of it you're screwed.

Granted... my kid probably has like $1000 worth of lego sets through his "nana" that likes to spoil him
