I see your point about the side-colum method wasting unnecessary posting space. Another way could be to line-up smilies below the post box itself to avoid that. Kind of like how UseBB do it with their forum software.

Exactly. But instead of them being displayed without option have a tab underneath giving the user the option to toggle whether they want it opened, closed. Whatever the option they use it saves that state for next time (so let's say it was left opened) they'll venture in a topic (new) with it opened. This utilises space so much, no need for popups, dropdown menu. And gives them the option to add in frontend end smilie category management via scrolling. I posted ma mockup on xenforo and hope to see it here first before IPB though.

But if you have a TAB that is opened or closed, then you click smiley. Your then going right back (full circle) to the more than one click thing, so you might as well just stick with a pop-up box. Same thing really (two clicks), one to open box, second to add smiley.

Maybe if it used jQuery so as your mouse moved over it, the box opened auto ready for clicking a smiley quick, then that's a little different and still only involves one click. Plus, page loading would still be faster because it's closed by default and only opens to show smilies as your mouse moves over the box displayed below posting space.

You could say the same with the smiley drop-down box used now here with TinyMCE. Would it be such an issues if you didn't have to click it to show smilies? Instead hovering your mouse over it made it drop-down ready for a one click add smiley?

That was an option I had in mind as I suggested jquery be used for the frontend category navigation so that may well be a nice possibility but real world this kind of setup could pose problems when venturing onto other areas under the text area. It's something worth trying with the worst case scenario that it would be fitting.

Playing devil's advocate here........

WTH is the big deal about one click or two? Your finger is already on the button anyway, so press it. Give it some exercise.

It's not an issue for me personally, but I do see Shelley's point that smiley's are likely to be used more if it only required a single click to add them, rather than clicking to show them, then clicking again to add one. It does make a difference, as minor as it may seem.

That is why on my own forum I offer a good selection (number) of smilies that are one click add them fast. I know they are more likely to get used a lot more.

I think no matter what happens 1 click will be necessary. So far we've got to get to the point where we are not clicking open popup click smiley *popup closes open again click smiley etc. Chances are matt and charles will be looking in this thread and they should be taking note about the smiley manager.

TBH the more I'm using the new ipb 3.2 the more I'm liking it but xenforo is still my no1 choice.

Matt/charles smilies under text area if your reading and then allow your imagination dev skills run wild and do your thing. Popup box is a nightmare.

George Bush doesn't care about smilies.

Yes but he does get his fingers caught between the keys on his keyboard.

Apparently the IPS folk have cut out a whole lot of their redundant CSS, so that's some good news for users of the product right there.

We still have one IPS site but are waiting on a current sale to finish before closing and merging the database with our xenForo site. Quite a number of the IPS members are actually getting a tad excited about that.

Just been looking at the re-opened preview board again. They've made some good changes with CKEditor, it matches perfect now. But the "Like This" button is a blatant feature copy taken from XenForo. Sorry, but it obviously is.
And XF took it from fb... who gives a hoot? A lot of the great features on these forum softwares are from Fb, twitter, digg, etc. I don't see the point in arguments such as these...

I have not looked at IPB for quite some time. I did take a look at them as it looks liked many nice new things where being created like Nexus and such but it seemed like it would be hard to get custom work hired out.

All that I feel I need I think does not exists yet but I think all of my minimum requirements will be available soon. I hope at least. I really don't want to be with vB any more.

I want to ride this out with XenForo after a couple of things happens.

IPB - Yes this is looking very nice now, I like it a lot. I'd like it even better though if the tumbleweeds blowing through the XenForo announcement forum were replaced with an update or two. It has been over a month now :)

Smilies - My vote is with the smiley camp. My community loves them, especially the insulting ones!! The most used one however is the bouncing boobs, I have no idea why, since no topic has ever been about bouncing boobs.

I really like the last persons avatar showing on the main index and also the forum index.
There are some things where IPB has done better imo and that's the post area, it's well divided yet very clean but can also be replicated in xenforo.
I do prefer IPBs hover profile as to having to click to see a users profile in xenforo and also clicking again to get to that profile, IPB wins here. And the profile arrangement as well.

I am liking IPB 3.2 over 3.1 by far, but my only gripe now is xenforo not using the ck editor..

That's one of the things I don't like in 3.2 the avatar in the last post area on index. it just seems overly bloated when they already have text stating who made the lastpost. Perhaps if they set the avatar whom started the thread and left the text who last posted this might be a little more logical but even that. Avatars on index, I dunno it just seems a little overkill.

The memberlist on IPB is an area I prefer over xenforo (apart from the icons) but that is cosmetic and can easily be rectified with custom imagery. Their alphabetical vertical arrangement is something I like, utilises space efficiently and just fits in nicely.

I don't know if that is fair. XenForo is three people that lost time dealing with IB. Every moment they spend interacting with us is a moment they are not working on other things. I think it has to be challenging for them. I get more than 100 messages a day related to my dinky forum so I can't imagine the numbers of communications alone from here. I bet they have a dozen tasks to do everyday since they have to be wearing multiple hats. The changes we are seeing in the forum world right now where started here and others might reap the benefit of it.

It's an opinion :) Life goes on at IPB and vB as shown in this thread, I can't be the only non licence holder interested in buying XenForo who is keen to see the next update here - and the announcement forum has not been updated in over a month.
