Typical Apple, following Sony's lead (see Xperia Tablet Z, released ~6 months ago)

Debatable whether the extra battery capacity in the iPad Air is worth it being 0.6mm thicker, though it is admittedly impressive they have managed a higher battery capacity with less weight.
