Installing XenForo

OK, Brogan I am now a licensed customer.

My site already exists on vBulletin, so FileZilla will not let me create the directory/URL that I will want XenForo to take over.

You can't install XenForo in the same directory as vB.

You will need to install it in a different (temporary) directory, then rename/move after the import.

Got this trying to run the install (Step 4): A username and password are being requested by http://xenforo.com. The site says: "Restricted"

You are trying to use the XenForo install URL path.

You should be using your own site URL.

So, create a www.example.com with a say forums subdirectory and put the upload directory from XenForo into forums subdirectory?

The example.com directory would be empty. All the contents from upload go into forums?

Do not touch my live vBulletin directories structure?

Correct.

Create the /forums directory so it's at e.g. www.example.com/forums.

Then upload the contents of the upload folder to that path.

Then perform the installation.

OK, I have installed XenForo. Added a few add-ons, trying to grasp the permissions language and will import later tonight or tomorrow.

As far as the vBulletin redirection goes how do I know which one to use? http://xenforo.com/community/resources/vbulletin-4-x-url-redirection.120/

EDIT: Another question. when should I set up permissions? I guess I can just do it after the import. Or, is it just better to do before the import?

Choose the script for the version of vB you are importing from: http://xenforo.com/community/resources/categories/redirection-scripts.2/

My advice would be to clean up your vB installation as much as possible regarding users, groups, etc.
You will need to check permissions after the import to ensure everything has been set correctly.

I already chose the vB4 redirection script. But the directions give a choice of: Standard, Basic or Advanced URLs and.or Mod_Rewrite URLs.

That's my question. I should have been clearer, I suppose.

That depends on how your vB installation is set up.
