I'm trying your demo, but I have questions

I'm running a site on phpbb 3 and hate it! I kinda like what I see from the demo, but I have several questions. But, since I'm not a licensed member I can't ask questions.

I don't like the idea of buying something only to discover it doesn't do what I want. Or how easy it is to do what I want.

I can't test styles which are very important to us. We have a header/banner which we are very fond of. Check The Vape Workshop to see what I mean.

As for sales themselves we are retirees and would desperately love a senior citizens discount. We want to be an educational institute and want to revamp the site, but there is no sense when phpBB sucks so bad. We are non profit. Our only goal is to help people quit smoking cigarettes. That's a cause worthy of a discount!

Our site has issues when searching members or team members, and if someone clicks the "Home" link they get a 404 page not found error.

How am I supposed to learn if your site does what I need if I can't ask questions?

Well, you three have been reported, but I get the impression that'll do no good. I'm sure you've told others the same thing and you're still at it. After 82 years, I've learned to recognize children. How long ago did you kids learn that word. Where did you learn it? Your 2nd grade teacher? This past week?

Did you consider there might be another website in the root of the server. At one time it resolved to /forum. Remember I said I hate phpBB? First I was having trouble with listing members and the team. Click on members or the team and it says, "The requested page could not be found." Back in the day, I was very smart. Not that it's any of your business but I feel a need to help you feel foolish. Often times people of my advanced years have Alzheimer's. I'm in the beginning stages.

I asked the community there about it and was asked to show the code in my .htaccess file. Thinking that had no bearing but not knowing much about this type of stuff I posted it and was told to make changes. Of course that didn't work and it screwed up the forwarding process. Thanks to people here that have a clue and understand the concept of "HELP" I just learned of it. Easily remediated, I'll go back to that topic on their forum, find the code in my original .htaccess file and restore it.

Now, as I'm sure a 6-year-old has never heard of Alzheimer's, here's an article about it. What is Alzheimer's disease? In short your brain rots until you can't even remember to eat or how to walk. Eventually you end up in a hospital in hospice, hooked up to a morphine drip to ease the pain of starvation and dehydration. Then you die.

If by some slight chance you're an adult, I hope you don't have kids. Calling them stupid is very bad for their self esteem and they will believe it their entire lives. They'll not go to college because they know they will fail. They won't even pay attention in school and will get very poor grades and they'll end up flipping burgers for minimum wage!

Might I suggest you stay off the internet until you grow up?

Reported for what exactly? I've just called out that the begging is ridiculous, that's unnecessary. You have a functioning forum to serve your non-profit. If you'd like to upgrade to a premium product, to pay like everyone else.

I even answered your inquiry on if salvaging the header was possible.

Perhaps if you don't have the thick skin to interact with people, you should stay off the internet.

This is going nowhere. The TS doesn't want any feedback/criticism and lashes out to anyone that does so just ignore this whole topic...

I suspect a hell of a lot of Xenforo forums are non-profit or even losing money and run by people who are no longer young, but if you choose to use XF it has a price and as far as I know its non-negotiable, but our licence has been excellent value.

Xenforo can be made to look pretty much however you want it to, that is not a problem but you need the skills or to employ someone with the skills to do that for you.

To the OP I would concentrate on sorting out the home page access to your forums before you do anything else - anyone typing in the address of your website gets an error message unless they add the /forums to the address. Sort that out and you will instantly increase the number of people visiting your site.

What do you hate about it? The first question I think to ask yourself is what you're attempting to "fix" by swapping to XenForo. Obviously most of us here like using XenForo and it meets our needs, but I'm not sure there is anything fundamentally wrong with phpBB. I think establishing what and why you want to change will help you evaluate XenForo as an option. I only briefly used phpBB when I took on a site some years back and it seemed perfectly functional. I didn't use if long enough to form any strong feelings about it, but my advice would be to be sure that whatever it is that you "hate" isn't something that can easily be fixed prior to going through the "fun and games" of purchasing new software, setting up said software, styling the software, scheduling in the migration and so forth.

I kinda like what I see from the demo, but I have several questions. But, since I'm not a licensed member I can't ask questions.
You can certainly ask away in the forums here or directly contact the XenForo team if it's more sales related.

I don't like the idea of buying something only to discover it doesn't do what I want. Or how easy it is to do what I want.
Whilst I've don't know if XenForo offer any refund options, I have heard that people sell un-needed licences to other members here (although I would assume at a discounted rate) so you might be able to recoup some funds if you found you didn't get on well with it. Generally I find XenForo easy to work with, but your milage may vary depending on what you want it to do.

I can't test styles which are very important to us. We have a header/banner which we are very fond of. Check The Vape Workshop to see what I mean.
There are a range of both free and paid for styles available for XenForo, which you can use and modify. Or you can create your own. Certainly incorporating your existing banner would not be overly difficult. However that would all very much depend on your own skills with HTML and CSS or those you have access to. I'd have thought within the demo you could work with the styles and templates to at least get a feel for what can be done, however I've never tried the demo so I can't be sure, but beerForo was able to in the demo. Are you apple to access that part of the Admin UI (ie the appearance section)?

As for sales themselves we are retirees and would desperately love a senior citizens discount. We want to be an educational institute and want to revamp the site, but there is no sense when phpBB sucks so bad. We are non profit. Our only goal is to help people quit smoking cigarettes. That's a cause worthy of a discount!
As mentioned by a few other posters none of us are aware of XenForo offering discounts to the licence costs. However you can contact them and ask. I think it unlikely they will offer you a discount however, but no harm in asking! I've found discounts only really exist either down to pure philanthropy or to encourage lifetime adoption (think educational discounts on things like Office365 - get them using your product when young) or to ensure you get some money when the thing is costing you money - so products sat in warehouses costing rent, or empty seats on flights and so forth. Things where it's better to sell at a reduced rate than not to sell because there is an inherent cost. Alas general software like XenForo doesn't really fit those, so you're totally down to pure philanthropy I suspect. Still the worst they can say is "nope"!

It's worth noting that you only need an active licence if you want to ask the XenForo team for support or you wish to download a newly released version of XenForo. So you can let your licence safely lapse until a new version that you want has been released, then buy the renewal. That might reduce your ongoing annual costs somewhat. However XenForo is commercial software and that costs money for my own personal (non profit) sites I find the licence costs (and costs for various add-ons and so forth) to be acceptable, but some of that is down to efficiency - using just one forum platform makes my life easier and I'm willing to pay a bit for that.

Our site has issues when searching members or team members, and if someone clicks the "Home" link they get a 404 page not found error.
That would appear to be because you don't have an "index" page setup at the root of your web host. Your existing forum appears to be installed into a subdirectory (/forums) and with that kind of setup you'd normally expect to see some kind of "home page" or have a redirect in place to push visitors to the forums. You alluded to a redirection in a later post about .htaccess files so it sounds like you maybe had a redirection in place at one point.

How does your forum do with SEO.
If no-one has been able to offer any specific advise your best bet is to review some of the existing threads on the subject. Certainly for the sites we host the "off the shelf" system appears perfectly acceptable.

Also, I thought I saw something about importing from phpBB 3.X, but I don't see that as an option within the admin end.
There are importers for several other forums. I imported a phpBB one myself into XF. The importers are available as a separate download once you have a licence. There are a few threads that discuss importing from phpBB, you might want to search and read a few, for example. There are some members here who offer contract services for that kind of work you could consider employing if it's not something you feel comfortable tackling.

Did you consider there might be another website in the root of the server. At one time it resolved to /forum. Remember I said I hate phpBB? First I was having trouble with listing members and the team. Click on members or the team and it says, "The requested page could not be found." Back in the day, I was very smart. Sorry to hear of your diagnosis, a truly horrible disease. Have you considered (if you've perhaps started to find some of the more nuanced technical aspects of the hosting becoming harder) any "managed hosting" type options? Obviously XenForo do their own cloud offering, but I believe there are one or two other companies that offer more of a managed XenForo service, which might leave you to deal more with just the admin via the UI side of things? Equally I'm sure there are similar offerings for other forum products. It might not suit, personally I like my data sat on my servers in my racks, granted in someone else's data centre (can't be too greedy). However even I acknowledge sometimes it makes sense to outsource some aspects! :)

Anyhow I doubt you'd be disappointed with XenForo, but without knowing what you dislike about phpBB it's hard to say it'll fix the issues you're currently experiencing.

This is going nowhere. The TS doesn't want any feedback/criticism and lashes out to anyone that does so just ignore this whole topic...
I can't help myself! Entertainment at another's expense is a great value! having said that, you're right. I TOO am wasting people time and will definitely be ignoring them. It'd be nice it someone could be blocked.

It'd be nice it someone could be blocked.
XenForo has an ignore feature. Whilst not quite as thorough as some blocking systems on other platforms it generally does the job. IF you hover over a user's name you should see a small popup which has an ignore button on, for instance:
ignore.webp
Click that and that user's comments (and threads they start) should be hidden from your view.

Issues with phpbb: For 4 of the last 6 months, it ran fine. Little complicated for a man who can't comprehend much of what he reads, but I eventually got it looking and behaving how I like.

Knowing zilch about SEO, - something I learned about in the last 2 months - and still understand very little of. Googles search console has discovered 10,000 + pages and only a few hundred have been crawled. Reasons being:

Duplicate without user-selected canonical 6602. Searched googled but don't understand.

Discovered - currently not indexed 3443. That I understand, but don't know why.

Crawled - currently not indexed 502. Don't understand why not.

Tons of duplicate content. This is likely as much our fault as phpbb's. On the home page, it has a header and footer with links pointing to things like "Search Members/Team, MCP, ACP, User Maps - showing where in the world our members are located..." Below that is the list of where you're at in the site. i.e. Index of all things vaping DIY, within that is our time as ambassador of The World Vape Show, or Ejuice Calculator and recipes... Looks like this:

Home / Index of all things vaping DIY / Flavour Reviews....etc. Wherever your at. Enter a forum and the banner, header and footer are all there in every topic and reply. I've asked google and she seems to think phpbb is not very SEO friendly. It doesn't even create a sitemap. I found an app that does that for me and have sent it to google review, but of a tad over 10,000 pages only a few are crawled. This could also be an issue with the .htaccess file.

Speaking of which, If you click on Members to see who is on there, you get a message saying, "The requested page could not be found." Click on Team, same thing. Click on "Home". Flat out "Forbidden. You don't have permission to access..." I suspect I know why that is, as you'll see shortly.

I noticed the issue with members and the team lists around 4 weeks ago. Asked for support from the community at phpbb. They have a template for asking questions. What version is .php, mysql, the bbs software version itself, what extensions and mods are installed and what's the last thing I did. After that it asks for a description of the issue and then the details.

Not an unwise process. So I entered all the info they want, what the problem(s) are... And listed what I shared above. Several people asked me to post the contents of my .htaccess file. WTF? I certainly cannot not see a correlation, but what do I know, right? I was told to make some changes which I didn't (and still don't understand) then someone HERE pointed out that the redirect/forward is not pulling up the subfolder the site is in. Rather than https://thevapeworkshop.com/forum it no longer redirects to /forum. I now blame that on the edits to the .htacces file. And, I still can't list members or the team.

And like I say, clicking the "Home" link says I'm forbidden. I suspect that too, is a result of .htaccess. Bottom line, between SEO problems and poor support, I'm done. Mostly poor support because that whole .htaccess in simply ridiculous to me. SEO could be my fault but having asked about it and getting NOT ONE response is shameful.

I'm willing to spend money we can ill-afford, if it included decent support, but I'm not willing to spend a dime to be told I'm stupid! I got enough of that from my own mother and it was free!

@PaulyWalnuts Smoking is an awful habit with no upsides, so I think you have a very laudable aim in helping people to quit. I know several people who've quit smoking, including my parents, they're all really glad they did and are now healthier for it. One was even a diehard smoker who had no intention of stopping. I asked him again about it a couple of years later and he'd quit. Epic.

I'm proud to say that I've never smoked.

I've been running XenForo Cloud for the last 3 years or so now, am very pleased with its performance and reliability and hence happy to recommend it. Sounds like the cheapest package will be enough for your forum too, like it is for mine. It's not a cheap solution though and I know your budget is tight, but it just works fast and smooth and you don't have to worry about the server ever, if you can afford it. Some other members here provide professional hosting services like @MySiteGuy recommended earlier, so you might want to look at his offering too.

You're highly unlikely to get a discount unless XF have a promotion on which they do very occasionally, but it won't hurt to ask.

Great to see you reach 82, but I'm sorry about your alzheimers. I hope you have a good few years left and if you'd like to join a friendly old skool forum, perhaps take a look at mine in my siggy. :) I'll be rebranding it (eventually) to oldskoolforums.com - the redirect works now, in fact, so it will be literally old skool!

If you're considering XF Cloud, you might find this FAQ helpful.

I'm proud to say that I've never smoked.
Not even weed? Man, I started that in '57. Didn't quit until '83 when I wanted a job at a computer consulting firm. So here's this old fart that can't figure out how to change the header image that retired in '08... Was a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer with certs in Cisco routers, switches and firewalls and was the Chief Information Security Officer at the firm I worked for.

Absolutely HATE programming! I look at coding and I drop the F bomb, NO...

Youngest Great Grand son, just turned 9. Built his own computer. Nice gaming machine, too. Can't tell you how many PC's I've built. Did he ask Grumpa for help? Not a word. Said, if Grumpa can do it, I can. Does he play games? No, he's teaching himself how to write them! He's working on a mindcraft type game.
I'll be rebranding it (eventually) to oldskoolforums.com
We're going to rebrand and change the format of the board. Lot's of vaping sites, Planet of the Vapes, The Vaping Community... Can't think of a domain name to reflect how to make a vape juice that's safe.

My partner goes by the name Old Goat. He's obsessed with goats. Our minds are as mature as a 13 year old boy's. I "CAN" be mature, but it's impossible for this guy. I setup the sight, he came up with the design. Does it scream education? No, it screams a 13 year old designed me. Finally talked him into letting me see if I could come up with something that looks like an educational institute that we can still have our childish behavior in.

There's a category called "Pauly's been sipping scotch on his porch again" where folks can tell stories and off colored jokes that we both like.

I like your site. Ima have to join but I'll probably be too busy with our site to do much. Check ours out. Tell me what you think about the maturity of it. Will it turn people off or not? The Vape Workshop.

Old Goat (whom I call EGO) is actually a renown flavor and hardware reviewer. Mostly in the UK, the US and South Africa where he lives.

Regarding hosting. I currently use Bluehost and am paid up for 2.5 more years. Can this software be hosted there?

Oh, and how do I contact sales? I originally (thought) I contacted pre-sales but that just got me some 6 year old boys playing in an adults world.

Not even weed?
Nope. Squeaky clean here. It never appealed to me and I knew the harm that recreational drugs cause.

I build and maintain my own PCs too, for 25+ years, so we share an understanding on how these things work and have the odd story to tell. Great being shown up by a 9 year old, isn't it? lol.

Thanks, I'll check out your site, I think the styling is quite inviting. Glad you want to join and if you won't have much time to take part that's fine, there's no requirement on members. To make it easier for you, if you DM me on here your email address and a desired username with no spaces, I'll create the account for you, all ready to go and no antispam hoops to jump through.

Seriously, leaving the money issue aside, I think you'll love what XF can do once you familiarise yoursef with it. All the little and not so little things that just makes it the best forum software out there in my opinion.

Yes, it should work fine with Bluehost. However, I have no experience of it, so perhaps someone here can tell you more about it like any little gotchas, or perhaps contact Bluehost and ask if XF will work on it, it only needs basic hosting with PHP 8.x to function. There's a test script to check for compatibility that you can download from here and test it for yourself:

There's no dedicated sales line, but they do have a general contact form that you can ask in:

This kid showed me up when he was 6! His dad lives in Michigan and we're in California. Moved here 22 years ago and never met the kid. They came out for a visit and his dad told me to ask him anything. Alright, can you name all the planets in the solar system in order? What 6 year old knows that, right? Rattles them off and when he got to Pluto he said, "Pluto may or may not be a planet depending on who you ask"!

Asked him how big the world is in diameter. He said, "Damn. I don't know that." I said, we're 3 hours behind you right? "yeah" You flew almost 3,000 miles, right? "yeah" There's 1,000 miles in a time zone. How many hours are in a day? Kid didn't even think about it. Just said the world is 24,000 miles in diameter.

He could name almost every capitol in every country.

I'll DM you in a new.

I asked the wife if I could spend $800 and she said she'd think about it. That's not usually a good sign.

I'll probably go with MyBB. MUCH easier to manage then phpBB. Free and a hell of a lot cheaper than this package or https://invisioncommunity.com. Check out https://modelshipworls.com. 15 years ago when I ran a community for our neighborhood I used that software. THE best! $100 the first year, then $35/year after that. Now it's the same price as this and their support sucks.
