Definitely a lot of misconceptions. What is the difference between a physical machine and a virtual machine from a user experience? Nothing. You cannot tell the difference between a 4CPU/8GB physical server and a 4CPU/8GB virtual server from a usability standpoint.
Lets take it one step further. You, as a user, are limited to keyboard/mouse input and video/sound output.
So if the server on which your VM runs was a datacenter class server with high speed fiber channel SAN, multipath I/O, 802.3ad network aggregation, and an every-disk I/O storage device like IBM XIV or Dell Compellent, the compute power of that VM would far exceed the PC. Add to it addition datacenter class services like automatic sparing within the storage device, dual fabrics for SAN and network, continuous uptime monitoring, predictive failure analysis, vMotion on anticipation of failure, periodic snapshots, 30 days of online backups, 7 years of tape archive, redundant commercial power sources, dual long-haul carriers and full disaster recovery/business continuance. You now have access to a quality of service and infrastructure that you could never afford yourself. Its also why your data is far better protected in a cloud than on your PC.
The only challenge for the average PC user I/O to/from the user. Keyboard/mouse is pretty damned easy. Even the fastest typist in the world is slow by computer standards. Video, especially high def streaming video was the challenge 5 years ago. But that was easily overcome too. If you consider the real estate of your screen as a storage device, it was really just a matter of applying reduplication technology to the video stream and reducing it to pixel deltas. Augment that technology with caching and compression and it becomes a simple task.
For the average computer user, the end user device is a small box with no mechanical parts, the same monitor you use now and your keyboard/mouse. Typical price - $100, less than your average smart phone. If it breaks, you replace it. No rebuilding, to restoring.
There are more expensive options for power users. Need to do intensive 3D modeling - by which I mean do you design aircraft or submarines, not "I create videos at home". We can add dedicated GPUs to your VM and add a GPU to your thin client.
Need PCI cards/USB connections? Then we move to something called a slim client instead of a thin client.
This was never advocating abandoning the intel computing platform for devices like smartphones and tablets. There are things you can ONLY do on a computer. Its where the computer will reside that will eventually change.
/\ blah blah blah....none of that matters when you are not on a gbit connection.... and I already told you I use this now and cant stand it beyond my local network...stop adding a bunch of words when you cant answer the
main problem with this greedy idea done to make a few people money marketing this to big companies and thus trying to force people who currently love their hardware, to rent the ability to use it.
When is the whole country going to be on fiber to the home?
How much is it going to cost me monthly to have a machine like I just finished building 20 minutes ago in your scenario...64 gb memory, 16 Tb hdd space, 2 ssd in raid, GPU w/ 4gb ddr5
I will prove you wrong myself....
you show me the best site for virtualization right now....
I will buy a thin client right now...like RIGHT now....anyone that you tell me to but not from the place you tell me to...
and I will configure the thing when it gets here and I will pass through record the output video signal from my 1080 res desktop from this thin client through my other computer which is actually useful even when not available to the internet unlike this thin client....and I will live stream it to my webserver for everyone to see and then I will take the video stream recording from the video on demand directory and I will upload it to youtube so people can see it that don't have a good internet connection and need a real streaming video service like youtube can watch it.
This is me challenging you
if your not pointing out a model to buy of a thin client that I can buy from anywhere and the service to test and review and completely document for the people to read, then don't bother responding to this.
Of course.
But PC manufacturers depend on this thing we call: Sales.
This thread doesn't say ..
Code Monkeys will design the internet on smartphones.
This thread is about "the masses" .. not you. Anyone who reads this thread is likely excused from this trend. We are talking about the 99.999999% of people who don't know Xenforo.
Alright so jump on the bandwagon....agree that mobile devices and thin clients are replacements for the computer...and watch me never able to show you a lick of respect for the rest of our respective existences because people like you are selective at which you choose to respond to and what you are supporting while ignoring statements that are part of the idea ... you don't and have not weighed out will happen over time 999999 out of a million times in this situation running a simulation.
I said as an example xenforo....what about free apps or free addons for apps.. REAL gaming, MUSIC PRODUCTION, VIDEO PRODUCTION ....blah blah blah
Once there is no way for people to feel like their own boss working on a computer....there will be no more real development for the end user. You owning and controlling my desktop would make me a sheep. Fortunately I am not one of the people supporting this....or pressing it on people to make a profit for myself.
I don't understand why every f(_)cking person is so narrow minded and can't see past their noses, no one sounds smart to me because they throw out a bunch of big words for a description. If the meaning and function of those words describe a violation of the principle they serve...that it is a waste of space and time.
If you see how I how I started my response to you DD, I said FOR INSTANCE....meaning one....not all in that instance, people not having REAL computers will effect everyone.
I am offended that you are using words to say that I juxtaposition myself as the important focal point of this conversation. It was a F(_)CKING EXAMPLE.
You want an example since you people are so smart...look at an ecosystem...say.... hey we have to kill all of these insects because they are pests, and then realize what happens to you, the smart one when you kill off that species and all of the other species of pests thrive because you killed off their competition an predators in life and now you are worse off than you started....and you can't get that insect you need to help you back in your life.
/\ if you can't figure out what I mean by the above thought....don't ever speak to me again and block me please because I am going to tear you a new one if you respond in the same ignorance towards me again.
Once there is no freelancers, big development companies have no reason to advance their product, it is the small guy who sets the trends and advancements....it is then big companies who care about the final $ numbers and to that end more than the principle which makes them the money in the first place and they will sacrifice your useability to be able to sell it back to you piece by piece with a subscription, basically a way to tax a computer user based on how much they use it..
This whole idea is sittin' on fifty cents waiting on a nickel and guess who looses the 45 cents per transaction,.....ill give you a hint, it is not the few big companies, and rich people.... it is the average guy who has no clue how anything really works but talks like they do. It is those people who cost everyone......
god-damned-sheep...think before you act.
