I think the PC is on its way out

Do you have an iPad and/or iPhone?

If not, that's why.

The desktop is quickly becoming a development-only tool, and thank goodness! Human beings sitting for hours on end at desktops was simply not meant to be!

Desktops are only on the way out for people who don't know how to do anything useful on a pc worth talking about.

I own every iphone and an ipad 2 3g which I found useless and gave it to someone to use but I don't want it back at this point..at all or ever,

On the other hand, mobile devices have made people horrible employees at their jobs in general because they are too busy doing uselessness on their mobile devices at work.

In fact....
I wish I got a htpc instead of that at least this way I could give my niece something that will actually help her learn instead of helping her grow to be one of the horrible people who feel entitled to a paycheck for doing nothing while they tap away on a screen instead of doing the job they agreed to a wage upon.

Nothing done in the name of advancement takes away abilities or sacrifices the principle. That is the complete nature of idevices, lock up the os and require you to buy from them, even if a developer not willing to give their info to apple has a slamtastic app, apple doesn't find it a problem that they are limiting you because so many blind people must think that breaking a roll of quarters open and taking a dollar out of it is the same as the whole roll of quarters and continue to pay apple for less. Without mainstream pc users...you have....no mods for xenforo, no game mods, no games(worth talking about) for that matter or anything else developed because of leaps made by your average people who are pc users.

I own an iPhone and my school has provided me and all other teachers with an iPad.
I much prefer working on my desktop PC to either device.

BTW - human beings driving their cars weren't meant to be using mobile (handheld) devices, yet I see this every single day!

Definitely.
And that's 90+% of PC owners.

that ten percent constructs the random snippets of code all the way to programs that everyone else uses.

For instance, not even knowing what a div tag was 2 years ago, I can now make a php application, write my own js/jquery , html and css. I can do this because I had the tools to learn one which included my pc. Just because no one else listens in class, that is not a reason to market that, people need to stop thinking so self centered. If they stop producing pcs and parts ....well, in 10 years from then, people new to computing will have little to no understanding about anything involved.

Couldn't agree more.

Of course.

But PC manufacturers depend on this thing we call: Sales.

This thread doesn't say ..

Code Monkeys will design the internet on smartphones.

This thread is about "the masses" .. not you. Anyone who reads this thread is likely excused from this trend. We are talking about the 99.999999% of people who don't know Xenforo.

Definitely a lot of misconceptions. What is the difference between a physical machine and a virtual machine from a user experience? Nothing. You cannot tell the difference between a 4CPU/8GB physical server and a 4CPU/8GB virtual server from a usability standpoint.

Lets take it one step further. You, as a user, are limited to keyboard/mouse input and video/sound output.

So if the server on which your VM runs was a datacenter class server with high speed fiber channel SAN, multipath I/O, 802.3ad network aggregation, and an every-disk I/O storage device like IBM XIV or Dell Compellent, the compute power of that VM would far exceed the PC. Add to it addition datacenter class services like automatic sparing within the storage device, dual fabrics for SAN and network, continuous uptime monitoring, predictive failure analysis, vMotion on anticipation of failure, periodic snapshots, 30 days of online backups, 7 years of tape archive, redundant commercial power sources, dual long-haul carriers and full disaster recovery/business continuance. You now have access to a quality of service and infrastructure that you could never afford yourself. Its also why your data is far better protected in a cloud than on your PC.

The only challenge for the average PC user I/O to/from the user. Keyboard/mouse is pretty damned easy. Even the fastest typist in the world is slow by computer standards. Video, especially high def streaming video was the challenge 5 years ago. But that was easily overcome too. If you consider the real estate of your screen as a storage device, it was really just a matter of applying reduplication technology to the video stream and reducing it to pixel deltas. Augment that technology with caching and compression and it becomes a simple task.

For the average computer user, the end user device is a small box with no mechanical parts, the same monitor you use now and your keyboard/mouse. Typical price - $100, less than your average smart phone. If it breaks, you replace it. No rebuilding, to restoring.

There are more expensive options for power users. Need to do intensive 3D modeling - by which I mean do you design aircraft or submarines, not "I create videos at home". We can add dedicated GPUs to your VM and add a GPU to your thin client.

Need PCI cards/USB connections? Then we move to something called a slim client instead of a thin client.

This was never advocating abandoning the intel computing platform for devices like smartphones and tablets. There are things you can ONLY do on a computer. Its where the computer will reside that will eventually change.

Some may only use these two devices, but not all. For instance, I use a joystick, synth and mic as well as a keyboard and mouse.

/\ blah blah blah....none of that matters when you are not on a gbit connection.... and I already told you I use this now and cant stand it beyond my local network...stop adding a bunch of words when you cant answer the main problem with this greedy idea done to make a few people money marketing this to big companies and thus trying to force people who currently love their hardware, to rent the ability to use it.

When is the whole country going to be on fiber to the home?

How much is it going to cost me monthly to have a machine like I just finished building 20 minutes ago in your scenario...64 gb memory, 16 Tb hdd space, 2 ssd in raid, GPU w/ 4gb ddr5

I will prove you wrong myself....
you show me the best site for virtualization right now....
I will buy a thin client right now...like RIGHT now....anyone that you tell me to but not from the place you tell me to...
and I will configure the thing when it gets here and I will pass through record the output video signal from my 1080 res desktop from this thin client through my other computer which is actually useful even when not available to the internet unlike this thin client....and I will live stream it to my webserver for everyone to see and then I will take the video stream recording from the video on demand directory and I will upload it to youtube so people can see it that don't have a good internet connection and need a real streaming video service like youtube can watch it.

This is me challenging you
if your not pointing out a model to buy of a thin client that I can buy from anywhere and the service to test and review and completely document for the people to read, then don't bother responding to this.

Of course.

But PC manufacturers depend on this thing we call: Sales.

Alright so jump on the bandwagon....agree that mobile devices and thin clients are replacements for the computer...and watch me never able to show you a lick of respect for the rest of our respective existences because people like you are selective at which you choose to respond to and what you are supporting while ignoring statements that are part of the idea ... you don't and have not weighed out will happen over time 999999 out of a million times in this situation running a simulation.

I said as an example xenforo....what about free apps or free addons for apps.. REAL gaming, MUSIC PRODUCTION, VIDEO PRODUCTION ....blah blah blah

Once there is no way for people to feel like their own boss working on a computer....there will be no more real development for the end user. You owning and controlling my desktop would make me a sheep. Fortunately I am not one of the people supporting this....or pressing it on people to make a profit for myself.

I don't understand why every f(_)cking person is so narrow minded and can't see past their noses, no one sounds smart to me because they throw out a bunch of big words for a description. If the meaning and function of those words describe a violation of the principle they serve...that it is a waste of space and time.

If you see how I how I started my response to you DD, I said FOR INSTANCE....meaning one....not all in that instance, people not having REAL computers will effect everyone.

I am offended that you are using words to say that I juxtaposition myself as the important focal point of this conversation. It was a F(_)CKING EXAMPLE.

You want an example since you people are so smart...look at an ecosystem...say.... hey we have to kill all of these insects because they are pests, and then realize what happens to you, the smart one when you kill off that species and all of the other species of pests thrive because you killed off their competition an predators in life and now you are worse off than you started....and you can't get that insect you need to help you back in your life.

/\ if you can't figure out what I mean by the above thought....don't ever speak to me again and block me please because I am going to tear you a new one if you respond in the same ignorance towards me again.

Once there is no freelancers, big development companies have no reason to advance their product, it is the small guy who sets the trends and advancements....it is then big companies who care about the final $ numbers and to that end more than the principle which makes them the money in the first place and they will sacrifice your useability to be able to sell it back to you piece by piece with a subscription, basically a way to tax a computer user based on how much they use it..

This whole idea is sittin' on fifty cents waiting on a nickel and guess who looses the 45 cents per transaction,.....ill give you a hint, it is not the few big companies, and rich people.... it is the average guy who has no clue how anything really works but talks like they do. It is those people who cost everyone......

god-damned-sheep...think before you act.

I'll help you out, EQnoble...

This will never, ever work for you. Your computing requirements are just way too intense for this. Your gaming requirements are far beyond the CAD/CAM requirements of the defense contractors for whom I've already done this - across their WAN. Your video and music production requirements are far beyond anything being done by others in the industry who are using this technology like Pixar and Disney.

You are right. You are the unique use case. The entire IT industry is wrong, you are right. We have seen the light and will reverse direction immediately.

Evolve or dies is BS. We will now follow your mantra of stagnate and thrive. You're correct, ecosystems must remain as they are. Why killing of a apex order like Dinosauria might give rise to that pesky Mammalia class. Change should be avoided at all cost, because its never better.

I have no idea how I managed to earn a six figure salary with my 30+ years of IT experience without the benefit of your sage wisdom. In fact, first thing Monday, I will schedule a conference call with VMware, Citrix, the VCE Consortium, Dell, IBM, and HP and will pass this on this them.

Allow me line up your shot for you Mr. Attention to detail.

You wouldn't be the first person who threatened to put me out of my misery of listening to this type of non-logic and the ole drawing of some scrap iron...I bet that since you are in texas you might be a better shot than the first but either way for me it's a win win you miss I live I take one to the knot and I am relieved of having to deal with this witless banter.

Since you are clearly such a man of high regard and moral value and most certainly a humanitarian with intellect way beyond that of any person outside of the 'IT industry' I will leave you with a friendly little tidbit....

Anything done in the name of progress which violates the principle is simply a measure of regression.

Have fun in your meeting, don't eat to many donuts. In the meantime I will continue on under the illusion that I should control my own desktop here on my own power supply completely independent of the internet and external network infrastructure as far as a requirement for my computer based home goes from media to lighting to security recordings. You pass this on to who ever you want....as far as I am concerned this thread and specifically the ideas you have of a desktop experience are worth less than some things I have passed from my lower backside.

As I'm currently watching A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, i feel inspired to label your rants A Gangsta's Guide to Technology.

I did enjoy the videos in your link though. They're almost as good as some of the things I've seen done with iPods.

This is Solace by iPad DJ Rana Sobhany. The video is a combination of it all: the song was composed on an iPad, the video features an iPad-faced male lead and it was filmed entirely on an iPhone 4.

Now in all fairness, this one wasn't done on an iPad. It was shot and edited entirely on an iPhone4.

Technology, gotta love it. It also shows the best argument against ignorance is the truth.

1. what link that I posted...if you are talking about my signature why don't you say so...
yah know for a person who wants to change the way everyone uses a computer, you don't pay much attention to detail...that is the kind of mental process that presents possibly scary circumstances for the future...I hope your friends in govt don't have the same outlook as you on life...by the way swell job at thinking you can sum up a person by their choice of music...or rather what I choose to display in my signature. So many leaps for something that doesn't even measure to a step.

2. Those videos are absolutely nothing special, they are not examples of 'real' video processing , they are recordings from a camera that has be clipped and merged and then possibly color balanced with a limited toolset. Nothing special.

3. So where should I buy this thin client from and who should I buy service through so I can record screen capture synced to a physical camera showing that there is no fudging on my part and then prove to you that it is not completely transparent.

While we are in the mood for personal jabs Fred....
Why in hell can't the Army do it if the Marines can. They are the same kind of men; why can't they be like Marines.

The other thing is I don't give any importance to criticism of those of us that have served in uniform and combat from those that never held their manhood in high enough esteem to join us.

Evolve or dies is BS.

Love it when people have this view, you must move with the times or be left behind. Funny, you still see people making Mash Potato the old way, peeling spuds for 20 minutes, boiling them for an hour wasting gas or electricity, mashing them up with butter for a further 10 minutes - quite a lot of work involved. Yet, you can buy ready-made mash potato of the shelf these days at ASDA, takes 6 minutes to cook in microwave.

Why do they still do it, why don't they move with the times? Because sometimes NEW isn't always better. Not in the case of home made mash anyway! :D

 I thought this discussion was regarding the death of the modern PC, not ego tripping of income and other nonsensical subjects.

You have no clue who or what I am Fred. The difference between you and I, I don't need to swing my manhood around like a lasso to remember what is there, nor do I use it as a measuring stick as to my actual value to society.

Allow me to highlight what you skipped reading while you went all Jackson Five on your Johnson and Johnson
