I regret buying VBulletin (6.0.7 latest version)

Hi friends,

I already have 3 Xenforo licenses and love it. I was just so stupid, for my 4th license I thought I would give it a try to vBulletin. Because back in 9 or 10 years go, I used to have a VB forum and it was great. I think that time Xenforo was no way near to VB, and I even did not know about Xenforo that time.
Now when I was planning to start my 4th forum, I thought I would try vBulletin. So I went ahead purchased the latest license (vBulletin 6.0.7) and when I installed it, it looked so basic, so I went to their official forum to see the plugins/ mods.

I found ZERO, I was so shocked and when I did a little bit of research, I found out vBulletin has changed so much, they do not have any plugins and their main software looks so outdated even the latest one. The support is dead on their official forum too.
When I opened a support ticket there, their team told me, if I want all those fancy mods/ plugins, I have to use the older versions which were like VB4 (which was from the last decade). However, they said there will be no support at all because now they only support V6 version officially which is still like a baby version.

I requested for refund but they said if I downloaded it I can not get refund, however I can sell my license and transfer to other customer name.

The reason, I make this thread here, for everyone! Never make the same mistake as I made.

Xenforo is the best, even this community forum is so active and helpful compared to vBulletin. Unless you have a special reason to use vBulletin otherwise never ever think of even visiting their website.

I wish if I could just buy my forth license here, Xenforo even without additional plugins is great. Now I have no money to buy Xenforo new license and I hate that VB license I purchased. If anyone can give me any advise please leave a comment, or if there is any exhcnage or buying and selling ways please help me. I really want Xenforo license and get rid of that vBulletin license :(

There's a few third-party communities that allow the buying/selling of unwanted licenses.. 🙂
Thanks, I think I know which one you mean, I will not mention their name here but it says rock right in their name?
I tried there also making a post for selling vb license but that forum is also dead. As I said all the VB forums are dead lol no support no where at all.

The only problem with selling a vB licence is actually finding someone who wants one...
There's that and the last time I checked vBulletin licences outside of the EU are transferable only once for $45 fee after 90 days. Transfers within the EU are subject to the $45 fee with none of the other restrictions.

Those were the conditions set out for selling a vB5 licence. You may want to check if it's still the case for a vB6 licence.

I think these transfer fees and restrictions should be illegal. It's your license which you paid a lot of money for so should have the right to transfer it for free like one can with XF.

I'm currently on XF Cloud so my self hosted license is currently dormant and points to localhost, but I have peace of mind knowing that I can sell it if I ever feel I'll have no use for it. Not the case at the moment but I've renewed it so that I can test the latest version of the software locally.

Invision have recently started preventing all resales of licenses, which I think is well out of order. I've got such a license sitting dormant / unrenewed which I know I'll never use and am stuck with it. I'd have to hand over the whole account after being paid, which might cause its own complications.

You are so right, imagine users like me who can hardly afford buying things online and then so easily VB can rip them off is so disappointing.
I have 3 XF licenses and my all 3 forums are deadly new, no one visits but I am happy with XF as its a great product and hoping one day my forums will grow. Even if they do not grow, I do not care because I am satisfied with the money spent on XF.

But for VB, it was like I put my money in the trash, all they care about ripping off customers with their horrible software. No doubts VB used to the best number one software but that time has gone now, I bet those free forum software's are much much better than the current VB.

I hope other people do not make the same mistake I made, I did not know VB has restructure their sh*t and its useless now, their area has gone!!!

I posted like 4 or 5 threads on their official forum for help and no one even replied yet even their team and developers are not active there. On the other hand, XF forum is active and the moderators are here all the time and quickly we get response from even normal users here.

I think XF is the best and I would NEVER EVER trust any other software! I am so disappointed with VB, I don't know what to even say here, its XF place and I am blabbering about VB here but my main aim is people here they see my topic and they do not make the same mistake as I made💔

You don't know who was a creator of VB & why it's dead product now, do you?

No, I have no idea who was the owner and why its dead now. All I remember like back in 10 years, VB was the number one that time I did not know about Xenforo.
Recently I made a come back to web developments as I used to run over 15 different websites years and years ago, then life started teaching me lessons ( :( ) I was completely away from the internet for years and years, all my sites got hacked & server too. I was just using basic whatsapp and social media apps to kill time.

Now recently I made a come back and noticed Xenforo was there, I am glad I bought 3 licenses of XF and did not fell in VB trap. For my 4th license I remembered VB and thought it must be so much good by now after so many years so I quickly went ahead bought the license without doing any research. Now when I came to my senses and noticed VB is dead. I will do research why its dead who was its creator but if you can tell me here in quick message I think that I would trust more, rather than looking up different websites on the internet.

Editing my post:-
Wow I just saw on Wikipedia , how horrible those people where, no wonder they have downfall now as they could not see Xenforo rise. Instead of competing with Xenforo they have destroyed themselves, such a pity.

It’s all ancient history now.
lol Yes, you are so right, VB is back in Egypt's pyramids! RIP

They should change their homepage. “World’s leading” to “world’s most declining”

I can’t even browse their website online. It’s not letting me accept their cookies and get past the notice.

That wasn’t the reason the question was being asked, though. Years ago, vBulletin was bought out, and decided to outsource the development to cheaper teams, but leave some of the original devs to code review. Two of them, Including the lead developer at the time, left… and they founded XenForo. Essentially, some of the people behind vB’s golden era were pushed out… and rose up to compete with them. There was a lawsuit and everything. But as I said, this is now mostly ancient history, as this started 15 years ago.

if the current friendliness of xenforo is any example for others, then run away.
my experience here with certain what i would refer to as cultist in any other format has not been welcoming to me.
so much so that i am looking at leaving the pursuit of a forum based website.

Your experience is colored by your being a proxy for someone who has gotten themselves banned from the community, and the fact that you have instigated and argued repeatedly to the extent that the people who are usually helpful want nothing to do with you, and are often having to correct you.

If you go into someone's house, and start causing a ruckus, they're not exactly going to be welcoming.
