htaaccess and site directory

After waiting for weeks for backlinks to show up (and there still aren't any in Google webmaster tools except the XF link , I had someone tell me that some of my pages are listed as www. and some are without www. Apparently I need to fix the .htaccess file in the root of my site to redirect all www. requests to the one without. How do I do that?

Also, does anyone know if the sitemap.xml file is automatically updated?
