Depending on your setup (-> Cache) it might not be possible at all:
XenForo caches settings in a serialized array. While it it thereticaly possible to manipultate this via SQL, chances of corrupting it are pretty high.
And if XenForo is configured to use a Cache (Memcache, APC, etc.) it will read the data from there, o chnging it in the DB would not have any effect.
The best thing would be to use PHP code to do this.
