XF 1.4 how to make a thread only staff can see

I'm trying to make like a staff v.i.p lounge that will prevent members from seeing it
I want the whole category and it's forums private unless they are staff

after research I discovered i don't have a private node option :0

Admin Control Panel > Applications > Display Node Tree > Permissions



You only need to set that for the category, as the forums will inherit that.

I finally found that area however after allowing permissions to see the staff area I still can't see it

Use the Analyze Permissions feature and see if you can determine why.

Admin Control Panel > Users > Analyze Permissions

There are three steps involved, assuming you have your groups and permissions set up correctly.

1. Set the node as private
2. Revoke the view node permission for the Registered user group
3. Allow the view node permission for the staff user group.

If the node is set to private, then surely step 2 isn't necessary? I have steps 1 and 3 set for my private forums and only those with the explicit Allow in the view node permission can see it (Registered and guests can't).

Of course, I was mixing up the two methods which are:

1. Set the node as private
2. Allow the view node permission for the staff user group.

or

2. Revoke the view node permission for the Registered user group
3. Allow the view node permission for the staff user group.

It's early - I still haven't had my cup of tea
