Are there any downsides to this? I vaguely remember switching from one to the other years ago, but cannot remember why.

Also it doesn't do anything about animated gifs already posted as avatars, do you know if there is a way to just stop them animating?

We're in the same boat. Imagemagick does a better job with resizing large images IMO, and we use it for wartermarks. The only solution I've found is to disable the use of all gifs (animated or not) in imagemagick. Sure wish there were an option for this.

This happens rarely so I just edit the members avatar and they quickly realize animated avatars are not allowed.
