How big do you allow uploads to be?

I want to have a large thread with gifs, pictures, and small videos. But I can see this thing taking up a lot of space on the server. So I was curious how big you think uploads should be. Do most people go with 5Mb?

I realize it all depends on how much space you have. But when they're just starting out, most people buy the smallest size and expand later. Does 5 Mb sound like too much? I would like to post about 8-10 Mb per day to that thread. And that's not counting anything else that might get posted in other areas by members.

This is what i do.
Go with the full amount your host gives you.
Check your attachments settings and tick the video box as well.

Images: 1600px wide and 1.6MB max.
Video: 2MB, which is enough for a gif. Videos are embedded as they would take up too much space.

We use this add-on and embedded videos play flawlessly. Highly recommended.

Usually 100-500 MB for videos, 10-20 MB for files (ZIP, etc).

Images often (but not always) max. 1920 pixel longest side.

Is there anything that will automatically resize images for us?

Depends on your available storage space.

How much storage space do you have? Right now I have Nixihost "Mini Shared" which costs $6 per month. You get:

1Gb of RAM
15Gb of storage
1 Core of the Xeon processor

Doesn't seem like I'll be able to post many memes. And it doesn't seem like my members will be able to post many pictures. But their biggest package is $96/month and you only get 125 Gb of space.

Starts making you think about hosting your own server, at your house. Where at least you could have a 4 terabyte hard drive.

450Gb, of which 68% is used (about 20% are backups.) But that is 25 years of accumulated data. There are other sites (not XF) that are running.

I think you guys are managing your own servers though. If you pay for hosting you get space constraints unless you want to pay a lot more.
You can get like 1TB of object storage for around $5/month with an additional GB costing $0.005 each (or $5 per TB).

You'll never run out of storage. Most cost-effective way.

Fortunately given the nature of my site, I don't think I'll ever need 1/4 of the storage yall have. Still my current limit of 15 Gb seems rather low and I would like to raise it to 400 Gb.

If you raise the size temporarily just to accomdate 1 video upload, will it delete that video as soon as you lower the size again? Or will it just leave it there?

I have 1 video that is above the usual limit. But I don't believe there will be any more uploaded that will be this large. So is it possible to make a temporary exception?
