Hostgator VPS any good or crap?

I'm thinking of upgrading my Hostgator shared hosting plan to their VPS plan. Any good or is it crap? Shared hosting has been way to slow. Should I consider another VPS webhost?

I would be interested in knowing this too.

Hostgator have been one of the best hosts I have been on (been on a few!) but sometimes my shared account can slow down, would be nice to have a managed VPS

We were on hostgator. I was completely unimpressed with their company for many reasons - though they have many good points.

I think of Hostgator as a godaddy with standardized hosting tools, without the godaddy spam.

servint.net

16 years in the business. They run their own NOC (network operations center) as opposed to hostgator who relies on sending emails to The Planets NOC.

I am extremely picky..

I was in on HostGator's VPS beta test. They gave me a very nice VPS for several months. It worked well, but had a few bugs that were addressed promptly. They don't use the Xen vps system which was my major gripe. I did not choose to stay with their system. The service and support at Linode has been so good, I didn't want to change. Also, even though HG claims it is a managed vps, it is only semi managed. If they see something go wrong with the server they will repair it but it is not managed 24/7 as you would think.

We used HostGator for a time and left. Wasn't very impressed with what they offered.

We've been with Servint for a while (and I used them a few years back for about 2 years as well) and the service is absolutely great for the price. My only issue with them is when we were ddos'd, they couldn't offer any assistance at all. We had to move to another provider who specialised in DDoS mitigation to get our site back online.

A general note. My approach is to make a list of what is important to me when shopping for an item.

When it comes to hosting, the ability to communicate clearly & timely with people that can explain the situation to our problem/question, and take actions directly without having to go through another company is most important to me. Since I am not familiar enough with some issues to be able to articulate the issue/question in writing, that means telephone availably 24/7 is needed directly to the network operations center. Many people do not require those things (telephone access & direct NOC communication), if that is the case then any competent reseller should be adequate. And personally I put Hostgator into the re-seller category because they need to go through The Planets NOC.

Hostgator does a reasonable job most of the time with simple things via telephone, but: anything more than *extremely* simple questions will get erratic replies. I've called 5 times and asked the exact same question of 5 different people and I've gotten wildly varying answers. And that applies to the support ticket system as well... wildly differing answers. Then of course I am directed to send a support email to The Planet to make actual changes as opposed to having the Hostgator tech person take care of an issue.

But that is just my 2 pence.

We had a small ddos issue, there was a massive amounts of traffic from a few IP ranges on a Sunday morning. I called tech support and they put those IPs in the CSF/lfd (software fire wall). Not only that, they spent considerable amounts of time describing how to do that ourselves in the future.

I use Linode, but they don't offer managed systems, you have to do do your own administration. I assume hostgater and the others are managed VPS systems. I put hostgater, godaddy and 1and1's VPS systems all in the same bucket.

The one I'm on, I'm pretty happy with and his prices are competative as well : http://www.radonsystems.net/
I can second that recommendation

I used to user servint -- they were excellent. For the past decade I've been working with Neosurge who now only do VPS hosting and they have rock bottom low prices and great connectivity. Servint costs more because they have additional hand holding if you need it and my experience with them was very good. I went to them because my old company was sold I believe (Ventures Online?)

IMHO, if you're half serious about setting up websites, don't even think of ever using a shared host... ever. The costs now are negligible annually (maybe $100-140 difference?) and the performance and reliability upgrade is worth far more than that piddling number.

We used Hostgator when our main site first started and that lasted about 5 months and it got to the point we needed an upgrade and decided to go with Servint and haven't looked back since. Once we have to upgrade to a dedicated box we may shop around but more then likely we will stay with Servint when that time comes. Their support has been top notch and always willing to help out.
