Google and third-level domain names

This is a server configuration question of sorts, I suppose: In order to increase Google visibility and get credits for all inbound links and for all content in my domain, is it better to drop the third-level domain name? I have my forum on forum.veggieviews.com, but I don't think it gets credit for inbound links to veggieviews.com?

I have Google webmaster tools, and I don't see many of the inbound links I had expected. I suspect it's because they go to the second-level domain, which currently doesn't have anything, and just redirects to the third-level domain anyway. Originally I had thought that I might one day add more stuff to the site that wasn't directly related to the forum, so that's why I chose to use this structure.
