Goodbye to Winamp, the best MP3-player ever made

If I had all of my music downloaded etc I'd use it, but I have spotify and pay for the premium version with offline play lol.

Always enjoyed winamp the most, simple easy to use and some cool skins :D.

It's my main player on my phone currently, is the app getting removed entirely too?

When i first tried winamp for android (was happy when it arrived) when the phone used to go on standby mode the player would stop playing music which was a showstopper for me since it would go into standby every 60 seconds if it was left inactive. Unsure whether winamp ever corrected this but I could never find a setting that would stop this use if there ever was one.

Hmmm. I go running with mine all the time and it won't stop the entire time, but ya if that happened to me it'd be a deal breaker too.

Strange. it was when it first got released and a month after. I just installed it on my phone and it's been playing fine now. In that case, keeping it installed, got winamp back on my device.. :p

I loved WinAmp 3.

I've signed the petition asking AOL to retain Winamp (http://www.change.org/en-AU/petitions/aol-keep-winamp-alive-or-let-it-go-open-source), 3k signatures needed still, but I've also been reading about Microsoft might acquire Winamp :) Let's make sure we download the latest version by 20 Dec 2013. :)
update on this.....

We have sent the following letter to AOL and will update you when we hear a reply,

Hello,

We believe that Winamp and its ecosystem are worth saving so we created a petition, a website and several social media channels to spread our message. We would like to wrap-up our campaign by officially asking AOL to save Winamp.

How Winamp can be saved?

We totally understand that, due to AOL’s change of direction and corporate goals, Winamp is not exactly a great fit with the rest of the company’s portfolio. However, we do believe that this product, its services and ecosystem should not be shut down. In our view, saving Winamp means one of the following courses of action:

- Selling Winamp, Shoutcast and related services to a company that’s willing to grow it. In this regard, the rumors about a possible Microsoft acquisition have given us some hope that Winamp will be saved by AOL. Whatever you do, please do not sell it to a company that’s going to shut it down and use only parts of its code or features.

- Open-sourcing Winamp, Shoutcast and its related services. If the rumors about AOL trying to sell Winamp to another company are not true, then we would like to ask that, instead of shutting down this product, you release it to the open source community. In the hands of its fans and users, this product has a real chance of growing and moving forward.

Why Winamp should be saved?

I think we all know that:

- Winamp is a relevant product today, in 2013. It is actively being used around the world by millions of users every day.

- Winamp has a dedicated group of users, more than of any other similar product.

- Winamp & Shoutcast are being used by radio stations every day to stream shows to their listeners.

- Winamp is a marketable product and can be a profitable product too.

- Winamp is an iconic product in its niche, just like Firefox is in the world of web-browsers.

All these are great reasons to keep Winamp alive.

How many people are part of the Save Winamp movement?

If there’s one thing we learned through our Save Winamp petition, it is that the Winamp community is large and very passionate. We have gathered more than 40.000 signatures in support of our message. This, in less than two weeks. The signatures are attached. We also have 40,000 comments from genuine Winamp users. You can access the comments here.

We encourage you to read what people have said. It will give you a great perspective about what Winamp users feel about this product. We also received 37 requestsfrom developers, product managers and all kinds of IT professionals that would like to get involved in an “open-source Winamp” development team. If AOL is willing to open source Winamp, we can facilitate kicking off the required transition, with the help of these volunteers.

Thank you for taking our message into consideration. We look forward to a reply from you soon,

40.000+ active Winamp users from all over the world

Love it! Let's hope for the best

My only problem with Spotify is the message i get on their website: Spotify is currently not available in your country (Canada)... :(. Also, i like to own my music...
Ahh that has to suck. :(

Actually owning the music is becoming a thing of the past. Especially when I can listen to virtually any song/album I want for less than the cost of an album per month.

The biggest issue I had with Spotify was the low quality on a lot of the music, and that generating a radio station was horrible. After 10 songs, it would start to repeat everything I had already heard, and it would and it just had a very limited selection.

The playlist generated with Google All Access radio is much better, and allows you to edit what is coming up easily. It also works with your own music (20,000, though I wish they'd allow people paying to have more music uploaded) allowing you to create a radio station based off of Led Zeppelin (not in anyone but Spotify's library) and it'll fill a station full of The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and other similar music.

Wish there was a desktop client, but I leave my browser open 24/7 with a few tabs so I just pin it with those so isn't much of an issue.

wow, the new winamp webpage looks promising... refreshing, modern and simple....

If they can manage to create a media player combine with aspects of spotify, rdio, or itunes, and that uses very low resources, i believe we got a winner!!!
The future looks promising for winamp!!!
