Give User an Option to self-delete their Account

Actually a mechanism where a user can deactivate an account might not be a bad idea. In this scenario the user does remove any posted content but only flips a switch that moves them to a usergroup that cannot log in and sets all email, social group and other content methods to null.

We all know there are settings to stop emails and other contacts but lets face facts, our users for the most part are not that forum savvy, only a handful avail themselves of more than a few site features. This gives the user the needed "unsubscribe" button from the site.

I vote yes - It's always nice to have options available whether we choose to use them or not...
Would I personally enable such a feature that would allow members to delete their account and/or posted content.  No way.  But it's nice to say that I have the option available and easily adjustable via the AdminCP if I were to ever need such an option.  Chances are though that such an option will not be added.  Perhaps that could be the first post in an official xenForo modifications community :)

Jacquii.

Whenever a user asks us to delete their account, we just tell them we only ban + rename it. In 50% of the cases they then decide to stay, and if not we just rename + ban.

Make it a user group option so it can be an option for those that want it and those that don't. For me it is essential as the more I can automate the better off I am. We use user group promotions and at a certain point allow our members to leave if they so choose. The post stays just denotes that they are no longer a member.

This can clearly change from country to country so it's best to make this into a mod. Also xenForo is a UK based company so shouldn't it only try to heed to UK's laws or even better USA's laws since it's hosted in USA? Please excuse me as i'm not a legal expertise :D
I find that an invalid argument and would actually say the opposite. Especially because there are counties where they take personal data serious, it's an argument to consider having an account deletion request feature.

No, never allow people to do that. Most people end up getting back at some point anyway, which makes it a useless action. Also, the more trouble it takes to get an account deleted, the less people will do it. And you won't end up having to deal with people whining they have regrets.

I Like this request.

I believe we should all have an option to delete our own account.

Requirements:
  • Make it an admin option.
  • Provide a history of those who delete their account.
  • Do not remove content - replace poster's name with Anonymous or even Guest.
  • Have option to disallow the use of the username for a certain period of time.

How about this - members have access to a "Remove Account" (or maybe "Close Account") button. The administrator would have options in the AdminCP for controlling the behavior of this button - for example, it could deactivate the account (so the user couldn't log in to it anymore), hide all profile information from public view, remove the member from the Members List, and turn off any notifications or messaging to the member. The member's threads and posts could be deleted (hard or soft), allowed to remain but attributed to "Guest", or remain as they are (attributed to the member's original username). This way, the account could still be recoverable, the administrator would still have access to the member's information, and the member would not have to worry about their profile information being publicly accessble. Finally, there could be an option for the "Remove Account" button to actually delete the account for those who really need it.

Honestly, this is a frequent issue on many forums and it would be a blessing to have built -in functionality to deal with it automatically rather than doing so personally on a case by case basis. Members should be able to ensure that their profile information is not publicly accessible and allowing them to do so themselves can save a lot of headaches.

I feel a deactivate option could be useful, but I would never allow a user to delete an account.
If a user's account was to be compromised, a hacker could delete their account.

Deactivate (making them unable to login or do any actions), but not delete.

As it was said before... in some countrys you have to delete an account (not the postings!) if the member want it to be deleted.

If users can register by themself i don´t see any reason why they shouldn´t delete their account by themself too. To be honest, i don´t have any urge to do that for them.

And i do think it´s a better way to let the user have to control over their personal data, it is theirs not any admins.

I vote 'yes' for this. Google, Yahoo and others does it.

There should be a 'Delete My  Account' somewhere in my settings page.

Clicking that link, there must be an option to delete:
  • account only - leave threads/post/etc.
  • account + threads - leave posts/etc. made in other threads
  • account + posts - leave threads started  but all posts including replies to own thread will be deleted too
  • account + threads + posts
  • all - maybe including conversations, what_we_dont_know_contents
  • ........ any options that might be applicable
and there should also be an optional textarea to state why I want to delete my account.

Next, I will click a 'Confirm' button. Then I must be sent an email to confirm my account deletion request. Confirming the email message will not actually delete my account.

It's the duty of the Admin now to delete my account.

If you don't like it, don't enable it!
I would enable this, as it would save me deleting user accounts which seems to be requested every week. Frankly I've got better things to be doing than deleting accounts, and it is functionality offered elsewhere. SMF forums for example have a soft-delete option available to members, as does Facebook.

Facebook -only- had a soft delete option where your account went inactive; they only recently started testing the hard-delete feature (Don't know if its out yet).

A member should be able to choose whether they want to be deleted or not; content they submitted should remain however.

I don't agree with it. A user can go on a wild spree of offending everyone or posting spam/affiliate/porn stuff. So what he does next.. Ah yes, delete his own account and the trash be left behind for admins and moderators to deal with.
